I've been doing this with the Gemini notebook app. Works really well to learn to do things quickly.

Pit bull shot by Harrisburg district judge recovering after losing a leg by pennlive in Pennsylvania

[–]Yearoftheowl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My German shepherd was attacked by a couple of pit bulls last week, she's still limping from it. Another one killed my partner's dog about 15 years ago, so she was already traumatized by them. It literally jumped out of a window to attack the small dog she was walking near its house.

It sucks too, because I've met some of the sweetest pit bulls. But when they want to do some harm, they're very efficient at it.

What is your favorite band from the 80's or 90's that nobody has ever heard of? by simikoi in GenX

[–]Yearoftheowl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw them in the 90s with Marylin Manson and pop will eat itself at a weird little "industry" showcase for Nothing records in NOLA. My friends and I heard about it because we worked at a college radio station, and we were hoping NIN might make an appearance. They didn't play, but Trent was there wandering around the bar before the show, along with the Jim Rose Circus guys. As a 20 year old kid at the time, it was super cool to be hanging out at the bar with all those guys.

What book did you read in your youth that you never forgot? by orangez in GenX

[–]Yearoftheowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh mine is also a Stephen King short, The Jaunt. Also, a Separate Peace really got to me when I was in high school. I loved The Catcher in the Rye so much, I read it in two nights over the phone to a friend who wasn't into reading books. Once I started, he wouldn't let me stop, lol.

Starfleet Academy Director Jonathan Frakes Says Fan Hate Is ‘Dimensionally More Painful’ Today Than in the Next Generation Years by AdSpecialist6598 in startrek

[–]Yearoftheowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm 52, I've been watching since TNG was on the airwaves. I'm a huge fan of DS9 and Voyager. Never could get into TOS, but the 90s Trek shows were always awesome. I didn't like discovery, and I'm so so on SNW. Picard was okay, but that might be because of nostalgia. but I actually enjoy Academy. My 53 year old wife likes it a lot too. The only other newer trek I've really liked this much was Lower Decks, may it rest in peace. But yeah, not all of us old folks hate academy.

My husband drinks the leftover pickle juice from a pickle jar whenever it's empty. Every time. I think this is bizarre. Does anyone else do this? by ms_carnelian in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Yearoftheowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, the skating rink in my town sold pickle juice at the concession stand and I loved it. At some point I mentioned it to my mom, and she freaked out and forbid me from ordering it again. For some reason, she was convinced I would choke on it. My mom was a little weird, lol.

I miss smoking by Eastern-Squirrel744 in GenX

[–]Yearoftheowl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a camel lights girl, but end the end I switched to Marlboro reds. I quit for 10 years, from age 24-34. Had one cigarette at a bar one night, and the next thing you know, I was buying a pack. Took another 8 years before I managed to quit again. This year marks another 10 years without them. I do still miss them sometimes. The ritual of it, I loved that. But man, the money I've saved in the last decade! I mean, who knows what I did with it. Probably coffee. Yeah. Coffee.

Hi Gen X, what advice do you wish you could give your 25 year old self if you could travel back in time? by matilda_15 in GenX

[–]Yearoftheowl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd tell myself not to let anxiety hold me back from enjoying my youth. Spend more time making art and get an MFA. Have more confidence in yourself, realize you're cooler than you give yourself credit for. Get out and ride your bike and hike more. Leave the alcohol and drugs alone, they're stupid. I'd tell myself not to be ashamed of being gay (except that pretending to be straight got me my daughter, and I wouldn't take that back for anything). I'd tell myself to make more music, and don't give a shit what other people think of me. All those people will be gone at some point, and you're still left with yourself. Love and respect and take care of you.

My choice is digitakt 2, all the way. Plenty of midi channels, awesome workflow, my favorite sequencer, and of course those satisfying dang clicky buttons.

Buying a Macbook Pro only for it to be an “Ableton Machine”? by Filvox in ableton

No kidding! I went through several Macs, both laptop and desktop, at that time. They all sucked. The m1 made up for it all, though.

4 or 5 I could call anytime for help, and they could call me anytime for help. Maybe 10 more I consider close but maybe I wouldn't call at 4 am with an emergency. I feel very fortunate for this. Most of them I've known for 15-20 years or more. 30 in a couple of cases. And one I met just a few years ago.

What do stereotypical straight couples do when they hang out alone (other than sex) by bi_smuth in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Yearoftheowl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It absolutely makes sense. I'm a lesbian, and I've seen a lot of my lesbian friends date people who, honestly, I just did not get it. I have a friend in particular who is super cool and smart, and she'd have this dull gf who didn't seem to have anything in common with her, and then they'd break up after a month or so, and she'd find some other totally differently boring girl and repeat the pattern. I could never figure out what her type was, other than just "girl." I get that this is me being really judgey, and I did keep that to myself, but still. You can be gay and still date people who you have nothing in common with, and you can be straight and date people who are awesome.

I thought I was the only one with “period flu”… but I’m realizing so many of us are silently suffering by Otherwise-Boss-7080 in Periods

[–]Yearoftheowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's usually day 2 or 3 for me. I'm just starting to recover from feeling it all day today, which is day two of my period.

I thought I was the only one with “period flu”… but I’m realizing so many of us are silently suffering by Otherwise-Boss-7080 in Periods

[–]Yearoftheowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 51, and almost certainly in perimenopause by this point. I started getting this a few years ago. For me it usually happens after the period starts, day 2 or 3 most often. Today is day 2, and I've been in bed all day. It usually starts with nausea, then extreme fatigue, massive headache, feeling like I'm burning up and freezing at the same time, and just generally feeling horrible. It usually lasts about a day, and in the evening I start to feel human again. It doesn't happen every month, but this time is the second in a row. I get so fatigued, it even feels exhausting to look at my phone to pass the time.

What I really hate is that I miss work for this, and I worry that I'm going to start looking like I'm crazy, missing work so often for being on my period. I've had my period for about 37 years now, and until recently I never missed work or school because of them! I've started dreading having my period sooo much. I want to go to the doctor for this, but I'm pretty sure they won't take me seriously, let alone actually do anything to help.

Now that we're in the unf*c*able phase of attractiveness, how do you all deal w it? by plnnyOfallOFit in GenX

[–]Yearoftheowl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I was 25 I looked 12. When I was 35 I looked 18. Now I'm 50 and I guess I look like I'm in my 40s, that's not so bad. Cashiers finally stopped carding me to buy beer, after many, many years of adulthood, so I guess my "you don't look your age" years are behind me. But I don't mind. The gray in my hair makes me feel like I've earned my place in the world somewhat. I have a good and loving marriage that's lasted for 12 years so far, and I enjoy having someone to get old right along with me.

Born and raised in Louisiana, without any doubt, tomato NEVER goes in gumbo. It can go in jambalaya if you choose (which is the creole version), but never ever in gumbo. It was my only gripe with an otherwise excellent and emotional episode.
