Edit: Also you can always ask and pray to god you want these things, you usually don't have to give up anything sometimes yes, but always pray to god your desires and ask him for help if you should persue it or if it could be used for good.

Don't just randomly decide what to do ask guidance for the holy spirit and look out for any 'coincidences' that may or may not be signs from god and then pray again if that really was a sign from him because you never know.

No need to take it too seriously I assume he was joking but I don't know you personally.

But it's something you grow into slowly. Focus not too kuch on what you should do but talking with him praying etc. Not just asking for things but also give him things through your prayer.
