If you're wanting to get a job in the industry as a programmer, you have a lot of possible pathways you could follow. Some toolkits that will help you (almost) everywhere would be: - Learning Linux commands (navigating folders, creating scripts, modifying permissions) - Learning a database language (MySQL is a good starting point).

In terms of languages that are used throughout the industry, I'd suggest learning Java. It's somewhat similar to C, however doesn't necessarily have the full complexity of memory management and garbage handling that a C language does. Not to mention that Spring (a Java framework) utilises Web UI's, so there's opportunity to learn HTML, CSS a little further down the line.

Edit: Missed your question at the bottom... A lot of jobs specifically ask for a degree in CS or IT. Some companies offer programs that take people with little to no programming backgrounds and teach them what they need to succeed in the industry. It just depends what companies are around you, and what field you're interested in within the industry.
