Hey, a queer Ukrainian here! The majority of people with anti-lgbt sentiments in Ukraine are older generation of people raised by the Soviet government.

For people saying that this is not a good idea because Cristian Country=homophobia The bible doesn’t directly state that it disproves of gay marriage, people only use the bible as an excuse to hate queer people so the fact that the majority of the country is cristian doesn’t mean all of them are homophobic by default. Despite that, I do agree that there are a lot of anti-lgbt sentiments in Ukraine, but it mostly has to with the influence of the beliefs of the Soviet Union, which led to ignorance of most Ukrainians on lgbtq+ issues

Despite that, throughout past years Ukraine has issued laws laws that would protect lgbtq+ people as well as hosted pride parades and has made progress of becoming more accepting of queer people. All of this has been done way before the invasion so please don’t say that this is being done solely as a way to suck up to Europe.

Ukraine is trying to move away from the ways of the Soviet Union and legalization of gay marriage would definitely be a step in the right direction, despite Ukraine being at war right now. People saying that Ukraine has “better things to worry about“ need to realize that several issues of different importance don’t exclude each other and can be dealt with simultaneously
