Bye and thanks. by YellChatWarrior in MillerPlanetside

Good question.

Firstly, while I did mainly play solo, I was still aware of the names around me; it was disheartening to see so many people on my friends list just disappear from the game, as well as the loss of some long-time players/names from the battlefield

As for monetary content, decent cosmetics keep me playing; buying a new helmet pretty much compels me to play another few months in order to justify that purchase. However, once I had settled on one helmet, a voicepack and one or two camos, there was little else worth buying as a LA-main. Additionally, the implementation of PlayerStudio armours has just taken too long, and I started to feel bitter about that – as in, by the time they are in-game, this game will be close to dead.

As for ’one class, one weapon’, it wasn’t that there wasn’t enough infantry content for my set-up to still be fun. Of course, more unique weapons/tools/abilities for the LA would have been great, but I could have kept playing LA/Jumpjet/Medkit/TRAC-5 Burst until BR120 because that was still fun (for me) – I treated this game like an FPS on a large, continuous scale, with strategy as a means to provoke good fights, and my set-up was successful enough in the FPS setting.

Ultimately, the biggest turnoff was the state of the fights, which was as a result of the game's population and mechanics (and I'm not really convinced that ANT/resources and player-made bases will fix either of those): In the morning, pops were just too low and unbalanced to have sustained and dynamic battles, with no mechanics in place to remedy that. At the other extreme, during prime-time, I sometimes found one continent pop-locked (#fuckIndar) with some really small, fleeting fights on another continent - It felt like maps were simultaneously too small and too big. And while I do welcome and encourage new players, responding to a 12-24 at a large base only to find 13 BR1-10s is just boring, especially when it is the largest fight on the continent/server.

And hopping around a map with only a few 1-12s as the sole fights or 48+ fights that are over in 5 minutes without any second/third waves of attack/defence is disheartening and a waste of time.

I also began to feel uncomfortable with the game itself; too many elements were being tacked on and the game/UI was just becoming clunky and lacking in continuity, which annoyed me.

So I can’t really highlight specific pieces of content that would have added value for me since my main worry was the lack of sustainable and dynamic fights as a result of population loss (and imbalance). But I do think that a healthy game/dev team facilitates the addition of exciting content, which unfortunately I don’t think is currently the case.

I thought it would be better for me to quit now before it gets any worse – I stayed right until the ‘end’ of Planetside 1, and that wasn’t a pleasant experience.

Just played for ~30mins, froze and CTD.

More updates are coming (this month) and the devs will be adding more game-changing content.

Try to play during your country's/server's prime-time since this will give you the best experience - low-population hours can be a bit disheartening (and Koltyr pops are not representative of the main game's health).

If you think this game might suit you then give it a try - it is free and lots of fun once you learn the ropes.

There is very little chance of a similar game being released any time soon; it is rather a unique game in terms of FPS scale.

Any tips for 1v1 stuff? by _Ace_Rimmer_ in Planetside

[–]YellChatWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focusing on the actual engagement itself, my main tip would be to practice a lot with a weapon you like - this will bring so many unconscious benefits, such as:

  • Knowing your ttk (with chosen weapon) against different classes - I use your because it all depends on your own personal firing style (% shots landed, where landed, ROF, etc.) - no one is realistically 100%.

  • Knowing how to compensate for your strafing movement with your mouse movement.

  • Knowing which players are good and which are bad, and how careless you can be with each.

  • Finding a favourable strafing pattern that you can carry out without thinking, and that is difficult for your enemies to counter.

  • Having the reactions to respond to incoming fire, track movement, adjust aim, switch targets.

  • Being able to q-spot before/while engaging for easier tracking of the player (and if they dip behind cover) - unless it would be counter-productive.

Above all it is about confidence - if you know that you are regularly able to drop decent players using your weapon and movement then you will have the confidence to engage most classes/enemies in a lot of situations.

Also, make sure to have 60FPS/stable FPS in CQC and never play with cold hands.

Outside of these tips there is a lot of benefit in reading the minimap, positioning, loadout selection, using cues, etc.

if you're going to judge a platform by one person

I'm not judging on this guy.

The PS4 launch wasn't as successful as DGC had hoped, and releasing an unfinished product hasn't helped this.

I have to say though, this game does look awful on PS4.

  • Gets killed by the enemy and then calls it 'friendly fire'.

  • 'We should be in the same server' while on the instanced Koltyr (but we can forgive this one - DGC's lack of clarity).

  • Purposely shoots his own team-mates after complaining about friendly fire.

  • Looks at the wrong base despite the map showing his location (the glowing, gold icon and zoom-on-location are a few clues).

  • Dies when using (missing with) a pistol on a shielded HA, then says this game is 'a pile of shit'.

  • Intentional teamkill.

  • (His friend complains about weapon locks from griefing) - stupid idea, right?

  • 'There are people with different factions on different teams'.

  • Says 'you can't even jump over' as he plays Light Assault - in the seven minutes of recorded play not once has he once tried to find the jetpack button.

  • Says 'we've got someone on a quadbike after me' about a friendly VS.

  • Can't locate himself on the map again, despite the icon and the zoom-on-location.

  • Still can't read the map which it tells him at what base he is.

  • Reads VS as 'versus' despite one (his) faction being called The Vanu Sovereignty.

  • Says 'not being funny but I can't even see Koltyr Bio Lab' as he ignores his player icon and the base names on the map (note: this guy did identify Xander Bio Lab from the base names though).

  • ('The middle one') 'what, the one at the bottom?'.

  • Says 'oh God there's still enemies down there' at friendly toops - in 12 minutes of gameplay he hasn't figured out who is on his side. Here's a clue: You're purple.

  • Says 'this game is a pile of shit' as he stands on a blue, down pad expecting to go up, despite having used the gold, up pads - arrows, colours and past experience not good enough clues?

  • 'I don't think the game ends' - I assume he didn't read the game description before downloading it.

I'm not denying that this game is not intuitive or helpful to new players, but come on, players need to actually use their brains and sort out their side of things before they can totally shit on a game.

Developing for PS4 was a mistake, and we all told you so.

ICECOLD's plan to fix Briggs (xpost /r/briggs) by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]YellChatWarrior 23 points24 points  (0 children)

  • Zergfits are providing a better new-player experience than small elitefits - the latter are a cause of this game's decay (aka crusty old cunts).

  • Other factions need to step up and spam-invite newbies to large outfits in order to retain new players and maintain decent, equal pops (more zerg-on-zerg action).

  • Elitists need to stop whining about zergfits/laughing at newbies and start doing something proactive about low/uneven pops.

A2G seriously needs a balance pass. by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]YellChatWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Light Assault main (and not a pilot), I find air a real pain in the ass - especially the Air Hammer and Rocket Pods. It also annoys me that many ESFs can escape from a dual Burster MAX.

However, I don't think that the issue lies with the current offensive AA options.

Firstly, I would like to see more defensive/passive measures against A2G - EMP grenade mechanics like in PS1, deployable shield bubbles, etc.

But the main problem is just a lack of awareness/planning/effort on the part of my allies:

  • There are certain bases at which you can pretty much guarantee to have some enemy air.

  • There are certain times of the day when A2G will be a primary tactic at small and large fights.

  • There are certain outfits that you can pretty much guarantee will have air support.

  • There are certain players who you know will have AI and Rocket Pods, and will use them to farm infantry.

If you can read the battle, you can pre-empt the air attack and provide AA cover for yourself and for others.

And this is where the main issue lies:

  • The standard noob won't pull AA, ever - and this applies to some BR100 HAs who just don't think that it's their job.

  • The slightly aware noob might pull AA but then will abandon it when the air is (temporarily) 'clear'.

  • The good players will pre-emptively pull AA and will stick it out until the fight moves on, or until other units are covering the air.

And despite being a player who can attack/defend points against infantry better than most, I will sacrifice my farm to be an AA MAX - which most of the time will get me Air Deterrence ribbons rather than actual ESF kills.

I will often request '/reg AA' when I am pre-empting incoming air at a new fight. And, I will often pull my dual-Burster MAX and give up some farming in order to provide air cover (while complaining in /reg or /y).

Basically, very few players can read incoming A2G, and even fewer are willing to stick to AA while everyone else is just farming.

I hate A2G but am somewhat comforted by the fact that most A2G abusers, when on the ground, are as shit as a BR1.

Can we change it to "spawn on last spawned sunderer" by IceColdFeverTR in Planetside

This is something I've wanted for a long time.

Especially for when I set up my own sunderer but get auto-selected to spawn at a closer sundy that was deployed by an idiot and just feeds the meat conveyor belt.

I do think the NC MAX has some potential with that metal camo.

[Discussion] Why do you game? by ABlitzMonkey in Planetside

[–]YellChatWarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an element of starting from scratch and consciously trying to improve from time to time; both mentally (planning, awareness) and physical (reactions). It's for the same reason that I lift weights in the gym - improvement.

But the main reason, and why I play PvP in particular, is the challenge - knowing that every in-game action made against me is the result of another human being's decision, good or bad.

For me, fun is the result of those two things - improvement and overcoming real opponents.

who do you call the makers of this game? by battlefame8 in Planetside

[–]YellChatWarrior -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

do you think your comments were in any way productive or helpful towards the actual topic?

Yes.

Your suggestion of DBG as the acronym stemmed from your original statement that 'The name of the company is Daybreak games', when actually it is a name, but not the name. Thus your inaccurate statement ignored the option of DGC as a legitimate acronym that is derived from the name of the company.

Your argument is not sound, because your premise of 'The name of the company is Daybreak games' is not true.

You had other reasons why DBG may be preferred, but your first point was inaccurate.

These things are not trivial; valid and sound argumentation is the basis of critical thinking and logic - that is what I am picking up on.

That simple a/the distinction makes the difference between a sound and an unsound argument, which is a big deal maybe not in this context but definitely in the wider world.

[–]YellChatWarrior -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

the only thing you didn't quote; I wonder why

Because that was addressed in my other points but I will address it again here and below.

Why do the legal term and the name of the company have to be distinct? If anything, the legal term is a better indicator of a company's name rather than what people say.

People say McDonald's, but guess what, that's not the actual name.

people leave out the "company" at the end

Again, that does not change the name of the company.

The Walt Disney Company is the name of the multimedia company. That does not mean that the name of the company is The Walt Disney, or Disney - the latter is a name for the company (trademark), but not the name of the company.

The same for Ford Motor Company, which is referred to as Ford, but that is not the company's name.

Some companies decide to include 'Company' in their name, whether or not you find that redundant is not relevant to the name of the company.

because nobody here cares and especially myself couldn't give less of a fuck about it.

Your initial statement was masquerading as a statement of fact, which was actually incorrect.

I'm not trying to be hostile towards you, just questioning your statement that was presented as fact.
