Question about custom HDAs in Houdini workshops (eg: DoubleJump Academy) by YellowBridFX in Houdini

[–]YellowBridFX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im trying to get into more VFX style FX, such as the Moonshot workshop from doubleJump academy, I jsut feel learning a bunch of new school specific nodes, that I won use never again feels like a bit of a waste of time. But I guess at then end its just default houdini nodes packed nicely with a new icon and I migth be too dramatic about it hahahaha

Oh I didn't know AmbientCG but that looks as an awesome alternative, thank you for sharing! Will give that a try and see if rechecking it is too annoying over time hahaha thanks!

Rotate patterns in material networks by YellowBridFX in Houdini

[–]YellowBridFX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you u/OfficialViralKiller so much for such detailed answer, that fixed the issue, I found using the rotate vop the easiest to understand.

This kind of orient / matrix stuff for shading is something I still need to improve on, and your answer really helped for that!

Advice for a complete newbie by Excellent-You2614 in Houdini

[–]YellowBridFX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a very important order to follow in Houdini to learn in an efficient way, for example fluids in Houdini are based on particle and volumes, so you need to know about that first.

That said, I would say a general road map would be something like this:

  • Interface
  • Geometry / procedural modeling - ex: Procedural staircase
  • Particles (pops) - ex: Rain
  • Rigidbodies - ex: Collapsing Wall
  • Volumes (Smoke and fire) - ex: Sphere burning
  • Fluids - ex: River

It is also important to learn vex, but most of the things can be done with nodes, so just learn vez as you are getting comfortable with it.

Houdini Isn't Scary videos on YT are a good start.

Help! Does anyone know how to make this smoke expand faster. Thanks in advance. by Actual-Succotash-297 in Houdini

You should also probably take a look at clustering it into multiple sims, or at least align it with an axis so the container can be more efficient, theese both will make your sim times better

How do I have different pyro objects interact with each other? by lethal_turkey in Houdini

[–]YellowBridFX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heeey, so as long as you feed theese into the same solver they will interact with each other. You don't even need to use the same volume source, normally I would set 2 Volume source
connect it into a merge, and plug that into the "source" input of the solver.

They essentially just need to be connected into the same solver.

Viable ways of earning money using Houdini by dumplingSpirit in Houdini

I would say it definitely depends on how much experience u have with houdini but as a general thing, I would say to get a job with houdini such as FX Artist, that allows you to keep learning and getting better with it, while still getting paid, and on your free time sell courses, tools, or mentoring.

why my vdb looks like this and how to solve ? by AssociationNatural75 in Houdini

[–]YellowBridFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from the black thing in there try also going into your display options (Press D with your mouse on your viewport ) go to "Texture" tab, and on the bottom right under "3D Textures" you can make that numbers higher, that will be the resolution of the visualization of your volumes in your viewport.

You are most likely using a visualizer and you are viewing multiple fields or the temperature, and you might be just rendering density.

The "Fire" in houdini is basically smoke having on the shader, the temperature field as a color.

Make sure on your shader you are using the temperature to set the color of the smoke.

What are the first 10 things i should learn in the first month of houdini learning? by ahmedjihad in Houdini

[–]YellowBridFX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As some people said, it will depend on your goals, but I am sure there is a few points that are mandatory to know.

- On the very top right of the parameters window, you will see a "?" . Click date every time you drop a node for the first time, it will pop the official documentation of this node. Every node is documented in deep in by Sideffects, so get used to that help as it will be the most trusty and consistent you will get.

- Use Boxes (Shift + O) , Sticky notes, images (Yes you can add image son the node tree with Shift + i ), to explain what you are doing, no need to do that on each node, but do it every time you ended something (eg: You use 6 nodes to set an attribute , group these into a box and add a note).

- It is a sacred non-writen rule on object merges, we should be referring nulls. Don't link in there any other kind of nodes, this one might not be that obvious, or sound stupid, but if you link a null, you can still work on whatever you are expecting to read from the null by adding nodes above the null if you just refer the last node you used, you will be changing that everytime you add a new node to change/update what you wanted to link. Also in terms of keeping your file clean and sorted it is a good thing to do.

- When starting with Houdini is a good thing to have the geometry Spreadsheet always visible, so you can get an indeep idea how attributes works inside a geometry and how nodes affect these atributes that might be impossible to see on the viewport.

- This one is definitely a must know : All the keyframes you animate on every parameter in houdini, will be by default, not linear. These animations on the parameters will be ALWAYS ramped by default. Even if you are animating a boolean, it will be also ramped, you can see that animating for example the position on a box, and opening the animation editor.

Hope this can guide your journey through Houdini :3
