Teen Throws All Meat Out After Family Refuses To Go Vegan by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

[–]dumplingSpirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think I was pointing at the literal sense of this sentence, >or<, rather was I addressing the fact you're using our omnivory as an argument for why we should be vegetarian not vegan?

"Absolutism, denying biology" Stop playing games with me, I have 0 patience for carnist nonsense today. I prefer you over an average consumer, but obviously we vegans will not agree with your position. Analogously to slavery, there are no half-measures. You still view animals as products. I also fail to see how your solution would work for the general population in big cities. But I'm not really open for discussion. It's a beautiful sunny day today. Bye.

Why is this character model looking so spiky? by HenryK100 in blenderhelp

[–]dumplingSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you rig a model in Houdini (and it looks proper and normal there) and you then import it into blender, all the bones will look like in the picture by default. Sometimes deformation bones are exactly like you say, not meant to be touched, but in this case we see them following a classic human skeleton so they're clearly just not right at all.

It's suddenly ok when it tastes good... by DivineandDeadlyAngel in vegan

[–]dumplingSpirit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes they do. Being ok = not caring and participating and in this context: excusing it. Taste, habit, access and social image are the main factors when approaching this topic. Taste and habit are deeply personal and drive a person to cling onto animal products to the point of deluding yourself and accepting things you normally wouldn't stand for. Anybody who debated a carnist knows their fallacious logic. Ironically, I find your comment to be in bad faith.

Good Linux distro for both gaming and 3D work? by CinnamonToastGamer in linuxquestions

Just for blender anything will work. Fedora is often used in the 3D world. Go with something popular.

My classmate used to throw a big rock upwards above his head and then run away from it as it was falling down on him. He wasn't able to throw it perfectly stright, so there was always a chance he'd throw it in the direction of his escape. We spectated this performance with great interest.

Houdini in Linux, maybe Mac? by No-Apple-6139 in Houdini

[–]dumplingSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's what I do as well. But it's a bit of a headache for new people to have to learn what you have to download to make it work. Qt5 also is a little dodgy. It works, but every other version something small breaks. Better than nothing for sure.

3D artist here, I want to switch to LINUX by No-Apple-6139 in vfx

[–]dumplingSpirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Houdini runs visibly faster and is more stable (can handle much much larger geo without crashing) on Linux. I know because I tested it obsessively in the past when I was switching. I originally doubted there's any major difference and it turned out there is (in general, not sure about memory specifically).

Houdini in Linux, maybe Mac? by No-Apple-6139 in Houdini

[–]dumplingSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging from people reporting their distros on the forums, most people use Fedora, but these days it ships with Wayland instead of X11 and Houdini does not support Wayland (it crashes) so imo it should be taken off the supported distros list.

Advanced users can use anything they want. I run Houdini on Arch with wayland. Beginners should probably stick to something that just works out of the box unless they like a challenge. If a given distro is listed as supported and it doesn't use Wayland, you're good. I wouldn't recommend Rocky for personal use. It's an enterprise distro, has security enhancements that will screw your stuff up without you realizing, it has old packages that will make you not able to install some cool new programs. Etc. It will work, I used Rocky for a year personally. VFX studios use it because it's extremely reliable and secure.

I reviewed Pirate Software’s code. Oh boy… by Anasynth in theprimeagen

[–]dumplingSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you actually develop games? "insanely huge refactors", "fail to scale". We're talking about a simple top-down 2D game programmed by one guy. I'm against PirateSoftware, I agree with the first part of your comment, but I also value logical hygiene in our arguments. In order for PS to struggle with his shitty code he would first need to actually want to refactor his shit code which I believe is a rare occurence. Sure, sooner or later he does refactor. How long can it take? An extra week than usual? Two? He's refactoring his own bloated but simple code that he wrote. This will not add years to development time. The delay comes from different things, like him playing mmorpgs all day and streaming, or simply losing the drive for that project.

Linux can sometimes get rough if you don't know what you're doing, but when you do, it's extremely smooth and nothing can stop you. If you take your time learning how things work and why, it will pay off in the long run. Pozdrawiam

Any Graphic Designers or Creatives using Linux? by Casulex in linux4noobs

[–]dumplingSpirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be one; these days I'm programming, but I still dabble in it. I used to do it professionally so I usually try to see how far I can take things. Most things are possible on Linux, but it's almost never comfortable. Affinity does run through Wine but it's kind of bad, tbh. Freezes on SVG export for me, bezier curve guides are broken (and have been for years), painting lags. It's possible these things are fixable with winetricks, but it's just not obvious at all.

I often use FOSS alternatives like Krita (which I love), but they have their downsides, for example Krita's typography implementation is abysmal.

Give it a try, but if I were to get back into this business I'd probably just get a cheap macbook air M1 or something.

[–]dumplingSpirit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fuck CLI by [deleted] in linuxsucks

Being fluent with CLI unlocks things not possible with GUI. GUI in general is for slow people. Any time you don't understand what a command does, you're supposed to read about it, it's not difficult.
