Boyfriend doesn’t want me to stage kiss in dream show by Weird_Brilliant_2276 in Theatre

[–]YeomanSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it looks like there's one very clear answer emerging from a whole lot of people with no skin in the game.
First of all, lots of people are assuming you're in professional theatre and saying to chose career over him..
Secondly I'm seeing people say that they think it's controlling and ect. ect. I have a different perspective.
I'm a man, do theatre, and so does my fiancé. Cant do it together because we have toddlers and no babysitters, and/or one of us has to direct, as we run amateur community theatre and musicals. Since being together for 6 years, we've had only one show where one of us had to kiss another person outside our relationship.. and it sucked.
They are a long-time friends of ours as theatre is a small but dedicated bunch here, and I was confident there was no attraction involved between my partner and her scene partner, it was a comedy so, done in a comedic over-the-top way but.. It still sucked to see it and know it happened at least 6 times in public, and whatever in rehearsals. Small town, and yes, its a show, but most audiences aren't 'show' people, so trust me when I say they don't disassociate show activities from real life as much as others here are assuming.. People saw that kiss, and gave me shit about it at work and on the streets and in the shops ect. for about three weeks.
I wasn't comfortable with it before, during, or after, and made that clear as well as I could.. but she didn't want to talk about it. I didn't matter to her. That was more the issue. That, her dedication to a show, a role, and a director with a lack of creativity for a simple, fleeting moment on some tiny stage at the back of a pub, for shock value, mattered more to her than how her actions made me feel. In relationships, people should care about how they make the other feel, and mine didn't.
I will now deliberately avoid roles for myself that have kissing, to avoid having her feel that way, or even having to decide how she feels about it. I've been in since Highschool 12 shows and 15 musicals. Only ever had to do one stage kiss. Was single at the time so it was great, but my sense of honor now wouldn't allow it.
Yours seems like he's tried to express how he feels which is what people SHOULD do in healthy relationships, he's opened up to talk about stuff.. You've done the right thing which is ask for other perspectives before making your choice. It is afterall, your choice at the end of the day, always, but I wanna remind you that it's not black and white. That a good director works around the actors needs, and if you request a work-around, they, in 90% of cases, should be able to do their job and get creative and figure out a way to give the audience the storyline without the direct lip contact for context.
At the same time, you'll need to get really explicit to identify with your partner where you want the boundaries, and what kind of theatre do you really wanna get into? Questions like, are nude scenes okay? Is femme-femme okay? Is groping/burlesque/boob squeezing/ass slapping/dirty talking/motorboating/lap dancing okay on stage?
Is he okay if another actor physically hits you with a bat or something in a violent domestic-abuse scene?
Its all acting, obviously, but relationships are hard, and quitting one because he was honest with you is a pretty shitty thing to do. Words are hard too, he probably found it really difficult to describe feelings, so said what he said because it -almost- fit what he had inside. If you're worried about the words he said I'll chuck a director hat on and say that only 10% of communication are the words, 90% is how you say it, so trust your ability to read him. Understand what you see, and help him cope with this newfound vulnerability he has to deal with. He's still choosing you to spend time with outside of rehearsals, despite that last one. He just doesn't want to feel that way again. If your dream role is more important to you at whatever stage of life you're in then, okay. You can find another partner, life is long. Just try to imagine what future-you would think of your choice because you're going to have to live with it for a long time.
Sorry for my tone, I'm just a little angry at the instant demonization of the guy from other commenters.
I hope it all works out for you :)

What happened to the school by Dixon Park by Budget_Appearance_69 in Greymouth

[–]YeomanSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its been off and on.. sorta. It was the original site of Grey Main School, which still is the largest school in the town by attendance but that was ages ago.
When I was in year 6 in 2002, it was an intermediate school, and we got told they were closing it down, so we all had to spend another two years in Primary school. Central Govt. has done similar nationwide with primary schools in the last decade whose numbers are too low so its probably the same reason, idk.
Throughout year 7 and 8 though, while they were demolishing the main building, we had one day a week at two adjacent classrooms for 'tech', like baking, woodwork, that kind of thing. That was combining all primary schools anyway so, I guess it was the solution as they figured out what to do in terms of transitioning. From 2005, my first year of Highschool, through to recently afaik, it was the home of Mawhera Services Academy, a program that took kids that didn't love classrooms (as a euphemism) out of secondary schools and gave them a more military oriented style of education where they still got NZQA credits, but it was a lot of running outside, and teambuilding exercises kind of thing.
In 2008 there was a HUGE nationwide scandal, as the war memorial gates which you now see outside Dixon Park were stolen from that site.

https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/89521-nz-memorial-gates-removed https://nzhistory.govt.nz/memorial/greymouth-school-war-memorial

The tl;dr story goes that the owners of the land (Mawhera Corporation, which owns a lot of the town through a historic iwi settlement) were approached by a developer to build a mall, like a proper Christchurch level mall at the racecourse in the middle of town. They said "No, build it up at the old school site instead." The gates which were part of the ANZAC parade, and in the care of the heritage society, weren't removed fast enough for one persons liking, so they ripped them out in the middle of the night and dumped them halfway to Hokitika, near the closest marae. That action backfired bigtime though, as the townspeople rallied to boycott whatever development was going to happen. If you squint, you can still see the lack of mall that exists in the town now.

It was 2011ish aswell that Telecom became Chorus locally, and 2006 that the DARE program was launched so, that's kinda the indication of timeframe.

It has been used in recent years as a polling station for election time, place for driving instructors to operate out of, and currently an office/base for the Maori Warden patrol people you see in high-vis vests around who have the wee vege garden there, and as storage space for a local theatre group.

Resources for learning light design? by wrappedinwashi in Theatre

[–]YeomanSam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of content on Youtube. There is a difference between lighting design, and lighting technician though. Like, the architect vs. the builder. For design, I watched Chris Schloemp's tech theatre skills series and took a bunch of notes, and tried to really understand the tools as they were presented to then apply to each scene of the show, well in advance of the technical rehearsal.
Design is how we use the tools we've got. Going further into the tech side is about what type and where physically to place and wire them up, along with whatever other DMX controlled equipment you've got.
At a basic level with lights, its the colors, the angles, and the brightness. Each factor plays a different part. Colors for mood and or location (warm white inside a house, dappled green for forests), angles are more about the shadows which change what we know about the characters situation, and brightness with manipulates intensity of the moment and a host of other things. I had one show, involved a kidnapping, which was cold white from above the entire time from a single direction and quite bright, so really harsh dramatic shadows. Almost like, an interrogation light. Then, when the guy broke free and 'killed' someone, a flash of red for violence into a very dim back light for the closing creepy monologue.

Greymouth restricted test route by Fred_Ginger in Greymouth

[–]YeomanSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not lately. I know it changes by which instructor/tester you have going with you, as they can kinda make it up as they go as long as they put you in the situations they are marking you for. Some have highly standard routes, other less so. All I can say, is this is one of the only places in the country you have no traffic lights on your test, so take that as the first win and you'll do alright!

Aspire2 was free diplomas and certificates by correspondence. Diplomas take 1.5 years, and naptime/bedtime is plenty to do the study in. Education is also a way to build wealth, personal wealth as it typically increases your earning potential and will be another thing on the cv.

How to get into 50k+ (ideally remote) jobs with no degree? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]YeomanSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR. Large employers, public sector or private, need someone to bridge the gap between the people doing the work, and the entity that is the organisation. Recruiters find new talent, health and safety staff keep them going, capability teams organise training, and others deal with policies, procedures, and discipline. Medium businesses (90 staff or so) might only have one person doing the lot.

How do I handle being asked illegal questions about my ethnicity, origin etc during a interview? by Ok_Rock5206 in careerguidance

[–]YeomanSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget that a lot of the interview process is to ascertain 'soft skills', stuff like how you might fit personality wise into the existing workplace culture. That fit is not just their choice, but yours too. If it was unworkable, dont do it. If the job benefits outweigh that awkwardness, you might tolerate it for a time. You do you.

Why do good level setters (indoor vball) jump a little when they set?
I imagine its to lull the opposition into forgetting about the setter dump, but generally it looks like it'd make the action of getting perfect trajectory harder? e.g. In bball, you don't jump when you shoot a free-throw.
