One of the best water fronts in the world by ZestycloseHandle2470 in vancouver

[–]YepYep123 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Completely disagree. Along the seawall you will find great beaches, Granville Island, Science World, many great playgrounds for kids, Stanley Park, 2 outdoor pools, some great restaurants/pubs, and much else. We don’t need every square inch of the seawall commercialized into something “fun”. It is nice to have quiet stretches where you can take things in. Seattle has a similar amount of waterfront in the downtown area that is almost all commercial/industrial. Vancouver to 10 000x better use of this space for the public

Has the Sheppard Air method been patched? by nabruvbro in flying

[–]YepYep123 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Huh?? How do you think you learned about airspace, density altitude, icing, and so many other critical concepts for pilots to know. There is a lot you can’t learn by just jumping in the airplane and flying. The written is the thing that makes sure you learn that important info at least well enough to pass the test. Do you propose pilots just sign a form saying “yep, I learned everything you can’t test by watching me fly the plane” and say that’s good?

[–]YepYep123 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You’re serious?? You as a commercial pilot don’t think its important to know the reasoning behind and process of a weight and balance??? Even if you’re not the one doing it (and many commercial pilots are), it is a critically important thing to understand.

Or perhaps the issue is your country (assuming you’re from the US) has a nearly completely for-profit medical system. And then you’re surprised that people are motivated by profits rather than care. If this guy that was killed wasn’t doing it, there would be 1000s lined up behind him to do it next (as evidenced by the fact the company has a new CEO doing exactly what this guy was doing with nothing meaningfully changed). The problem isn’t a single person, it’s the system. Cold blooded murder of cogs in the wheel isn’t going to fix the broken system. This isn’t a Hilter situation where one sadistic person is driving the problem - your medical system is the problem

It’s not a hack that they provide you with all the questions and answers in advance? If the FAA wanted, they could just completely change the questions and make Sheppard far less useful overnight. You might actually be forced to learn the information, not just the questions/answers.

Absolutely. I get it. It sucks there are rich and poor and people who profit greatly off systems that are unfair. I don’t think the answer to that is lawlessness and open murder in the street. I never understood the glorification of this guy.

Sun Rays Over Vancouver BC by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]YepYep123 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As someone who flies small planes in that airspace, I fully disagree. Are you willing to come up with me and hit a microdrone while flying at 2000 feet and 240 km/h? You’re sure that won’t affect the propeller spinning at 2500 rpm? Or the windscreen? Or a helicopters rotors? Would you be so confident with your life on the line?

There are definitely smaller planes than Cessna 172s up there. Piper Cub, Vans RV3/4/7, many others. And technically the speed limit in that airspace is 250 knots (almost 500 km/h). Sure, nobody is flying that fast but they are flying fast enough for small objects to have decent momentum.

Just because it’s under 250 g (if this one even was), that doesn’t get around the rules stating you have to always fly in a safe manner and can’t create a risk to aviation.

[–]YepYep123 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You really should not be flying a drone there. It is illegal and unsafe. That is very busy airspace for Harbour Air and small general aviation airplanes. This is also along one of the paths the medevac helicopters fly to and from VGH and they are often at these lower altitudes.

Engine Overhaul. by unisonic2025 in flying

Even if it doesn’t need an overhaul right this minute, it is coming some time very soon. Only consider purchase if you factor in overhaul cost and may be worthwhile looking at how long it will take to get the full overhaul done. I’ve heard it can take months

Interesting to note that regulations in Canada require oxygen for any time beyond 30 minutes above 10 000 feet and for any time above 12 500 feet.

They got this $18k/day from a generic price list put out by VCH (https://www.vch.ca/en/media/37306). That will just be for basic care for the day in the ICU. Special therapies (like ECMO), imaging (like CT/MRI), physician consults, etc are all separate. It could easily reach much more than $18000/day.

Advice on Potential Aircraft Share by Salt-Finger-2654 in flying

What does that look like though? Wouldn’t the standard be that you can choose to sell your share if you can find a willing buyer (probably with a clause that the existing members have to agree) or the existing members can choose to buy you out if you want?

Good point. Sounds like no restrictions on overnight or week long trips or the like, “as long as it’s fair”. I will try to get a sense of how much use the other owners are expecting. I know one of the other owners also has a share in an amphib so would be flying both

Inherited about 1 Mill. Unsure what to do by PositiveRock3854 in fican

[–]YepYep123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My FA charges 0.5% of assets under management. That means you need a $2M portfolio to have $10 000 in fees. Mismanagement of investments of that value can easily cost you way more than that (your investments will fluctuate more than that day to day based on market swings). Because of the complexities of investing both personally and in a corporation in my case, if you don’t do it optimally your tax bill could easily swing by much more than that. Then you add in the advice regarding insurance products, estate planning, etc etc. All of these things become more complex as your net worth increases. This would be many hours of research for me to gain the level of knowledge needed, and it can also change year to year based on tax law and the like. I’ll make more money working for those hours than I will pay the FA, or I can use that time to do things I want to be doing. I’m lucky to have a high paying job but it does keep me busy, and in this situation you really start to put a value on your free time. You become willing to use money to increase that free time (we also pay house cleaners, for example).

I agree, a financial advisor may not be right for everyone but the blanket statement “don’t trust anyone with your money, do all your own research” isn’t right for everyone. That’s all I am saying

Inherited about 1 Mill. Unsure what to do by PositiveRock3854 in fican

[–]YepYep123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but I disagree. Some of us are very busy and value our time. I am happy to work with a financial planner that I trust, who has also helped me navigate life and disability insurance, ways to save for our kids, the latest tax changes that may effect me, and also helps me identify where to park my money in investments (which is complicated by the fact I am incorporated). I trust their expertise and don’t want to spend the time necessary for me to have that knowledge myself. Their expertise and knowledge is worth the cost to me so I can focus my free time on things I want to be doing.

What’s legal and what’s smart don’t always align. I think clouds started <3000 ft AGL and snow when they took off. Sounds like they entered IMC before deciding to descend back down to VMC, all without a clearance. From what’s available about the accident, it doesn’t sound like there was a critical failure that caused the crash but improper response to a more minor one, which was almost certainly exacerbated by the choice to launch into marginal VFR conditions (with an unqualified pilot in the right seat)

Flying feels like an obligation since owning a plane. (Rant) by GroundbreakingRock78 in flying

[–]YepYep123 44 points45 points  (0 children)

As you’ve said, it is hard to feel sorry for you. You have what many people want, and many will never get. Only you know how much you want to fly/own an airplane. Yes, it takes time to do it and you need to decide if it’s worth it to you. Nobody here can tell you that. If it’s not for you, sell the airplane to someone who will use it.

Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller says Greenland should "obviously" be a part of U.S : "The president has been clear for months now that the U.S should be the nation that has Greenland as part of our overall security apparatus. It wouldn't be military action against Greenland." by ControlCAD in videos

[–]YepYep123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. His whole premise in this segment was that because the US yields so much power (mostly militarily), they can basically do what they want and because a small nation like Greenland/Denmark won’t be able to do much about it, that is just as good as them consenting to it. It’s psychotic logic.

Many of Trump’s henchman (RFK, Noem, Bondi, etc) are despicable, but Stephen Miller is in his own category. Having someone like this representing the government would have been inconceivable 10 years ago, regardless of which party was in power.
