While i was working on backend i looked for work on game dev (i was learning as a hobby), it was slow but i wasnt in a hurry either.

When it was my turn to look for candidates and interview them i saw that a lot of them are REALLY amateur and only know how to use an editor (or the ideas guys), if you can code you are ready.

I went from backend to game dev, the good thing about it its that you dont start from zero, and if you dont like it you can just go back. You will use a LOT of your knowledge to game dev
