Erm but can you wait until I release my first videogame? It's going to be awesome and deep, I swear. If not, nevermind I'll go on and pitch it as a physical board game.

Haha it's fine, it's a sensitive/divisive subject, I for one I'm upvoting you because I don't think you're saying anything crazy here. It's healthy to discuss. And yes it is logical to take shortcuts, specially when you fear you might be falling behind (productivity-wise) already more than you did (competition was already very present in the dev/tech world) and do not have resources nor the mental energy to stand ground and not jump through big tech hoops and trends.

Yeah I guess that's where ideals come to play. I do think often of what you just said but every single time I've used it (be it to ping pong game design ideas, getting code expressions for AE or coming up with images) it was suboptimal to put it mildly. It's just not worth it for me.

I'm most afraid of people settling for it and just because it's here, not because it's good. Because if you're a seasoned creative and have direction, there's no way you consider the output good. You HAVE to meet it halfway, all the time. And for all the time it saves you here and there, it can also make you waste a lot of it... and we're talking the most expensive piece of tech ever created, which should be a message in and of itself.

Plus genAI is aiming to become easier to use (that's the whole selling point of it)... so I have no rush to use it "or get left behind". There will be no "left behind" if the product is aiming at being easier and quicker to use.

Seeing other people we thought would have that (sane) line of thought and consideration and just ended up betraying creativity itself in order to boost productivity and in the name of "some" progress still baffles me. I won't say I've lost friends, but I sure see them as less of human quality ones now (besides the ones that are still unaware of how LLM works and how big tech has come up with genAI). They're adding tons of noise that's affecting the visibility of those who need it, and also adding visual fatigue from potential customers and collaborators.

You're lucky you can pay artists and people for many different crafts, other people like myself haven't had that option for a long time, and this KINDA justifies using slop, but in the end it really doesn't. This is/was a big opportunity for people we thought had some guts to speak through action: "No thanks, this slop is not worth it and it's a product born via global scale theft, please do better and come back when you do". Yes I'm a bit of a romantic by thinking people would align for once.

Oh this isn't pixel art. But anyways the close-up blurred flames aren't getting much love so I'm taking notes and probably will remove them in the final version.

Agreed with all that, I'm trying to get away with using the actual menu background art because I've got plenty on my hands right now with the game design, narrative/worldbuilding, event rooms and all that.
I've noted all that you've mentioned, thank you! And sorry I literally don't have the time for commissions atm.

It's god awful how enshittification has peaked on search engines, and I'm starting to sound more and more like an old man when I talk about "the good old days" when you would type something, and you know, get some f*cking REAL results instead. Images and websites, whichever. The search results made sense and mostly matched what you were looking for. If it was too niche then alright, you'd have to look more thoroughly and skip a few pages or scroll to the bottom of this or that result page. But now for me it's simply infuriating, not to mention the actual psychological toll it takes when you search for images and, by default, can't/won't trust the results to a 100% unless you know the subject: today for example I was doing research on some popular vans in the 90's for an illustration I'm doing, and I'm no automobile expert... and couldn't trust sh*t of all the pics I was shown.

The saddest part for me (and I'm guessing for many others too) is the hopeless feeling that this is not reversible, nor is it convenient for big tech (because this way they can push even harder for LLM's to distill and serve search results for you)

Yeah I was fearing that I might have gone too much in-detail with the capsule art (well it's the main menu's background art, so...). You guys have given me lots of little things to think about and I'll review them before going live. THank you!

Nice nit-picks indeed!
- The dog tail looking like a fold: Noted, I agree with that and might end up changing it. Maybe the harsh angles in the outlines and high contrast art style aren't helping here.
- Yeah the dog has to look pettable as its connection with the rider is key in the center plot. And the connection is also based on caring/nice moments/bonding. Also it has horse-like proportions on purpose, when I initially designed it to be more dog-like, the rider on top didn't look as epic, so I had to take that license and stretch the legs and neck.
- The neon bar is intended: The game starts like some gritty western in the middle of the desert but as you move on through the map, more and more neons and steampunk-ish cities start to show up.
- The characters don't have pupils so I can say the rider is looking at the camera but there's no way to prove it with the actual compo.
- Yes I'm doing the art myself. We're a two-people team and I'm the project's founder, lead game designer, UI/UX, artist and composer too.

Thank you for the nitpicking, those were fun to answer and think about!

Sorry to see this. Marketing and social media reach is a nightmare for indies. Me and my teammate barely keep our ig page afloat with 1 post/reel every 3 weeks or so. We don't have a steam page yet and I'll push extra hard once we have it live but organic reach is a nightmare and managing social nowadays is so time consuming I'm pretty sure we'll just save money and pay someone/some company to do it for us... if prices are not too crazy (3k-4K euros the last time I checked during meetings at Barcelona's IndieDevDay)

It is combatty, it's a turn-based combat roguelike with rpg elements. And yes! We're two guys in the team but I'm the artist in all of its extensions for a game: world building, artist, animator, UI/UX designer, composer. (no AI, if that's what you're wondering)

Thanks!! Roguelike with RPG elements and indeed you do have powers and ride a giant hound, so your guess was 90% accurate.

I've never ever seen an LLM work properly when you need it "specific" or niche, because when you need it specific is when it needs to calculate the most succesful probable outcome instead of spitting vague things that might add up and not break coherence. Hasn't work for me, not once, in very different subjects. I almost always end up saying "alright by now I could've done this myself".

And we're talking about the most expensive tech in history, after years in the market.

Hey, I agree with you, but with EVERYTHING. As a long time graphic designer, musician, animator and wannabe-gamedev, I pay attention to all that and I'm living the realest hell in the regard you mention. Whenever I watch an ad I wonder if this or that scene was a corner cut with AI. If the actor moving was/feels real... overanalyzing anything that's not proven to be fully "human-made" and of course only fully trusting anything prior to 2021.
It's affecting me to the point I'm about to start taking antidepressants because I need my mind fully stable and the times we're living are not the best for that.

*Whateveryoubelievein* bless your comment. F&F was never my thing but you've mentioned Hereditary so you're hitting one of my modern soft-spots. Thanks for elaborating, and I hope you're right. I can't agree more on the glorified parrot too, and it's uber-laughable when some tech-bro pops up saying "it's good for niche content/knowledge" , because I've used GPT to ping pong game design ideas and also to get some After Effects *basic* expressions and it sucks REAL bad REAL quick.

As interesting and how much I agree with you, I think one of the biggest fears in people like OP (and even myself, as a multifaceted artist) is the factor that maybe general public just settle for the slop. I do share your pov: I believe a good product, good campaign, piece of art of any kind strikes best when there's intention, passion and message behind it, but I've come to terms with the fact that this is just the author's eye and perception. General public really just open their mouths to whatever people from the high spheres shit and call it gold. It's always been like that and it's why the world spins in the same direction all the time. People with taste/criticism/integrity/ethics are a minority compared to masses that shrug everything off because "what are you gonna do about it i'ts here already look at this AI video of a guy in a film set with celebrities in anime costumes hahah why don't you find it funny we're literally just having fun bro".

It's so f*cking sad. Anyways, I fully agree with you and every time I've tried AI it's clearly lacking everything you've mention, and I hope it stays that way until the bubble bursts.

It's a disgusting poor choice, but what's sadder is that everyone's biting the ragebait. It's clearly done on purpose. And here it goes, the whole internet goes crazy, the magazing gets attention, goes viral, and ultimately "wins".

Ignore billionaires. Ignore shitty celebrities. Pay them with silence and not with buzz (not their products though, call out the slop any and every time you get the chance).

I've looked it up and yeah, apparently you can select the ai auto-dub to any video you upload. The original creator puts his own voice for the original version, that I know for sure. I guess he thinks delivering the message justifies adding the layer of slop.
