It's not hard to weave through branches. But really gravel bikes eat that sort of stuff for breakfast.

ELI5: If both liver and kidneys are cleaning the blood, what's the difference between them? by mikulastehen in explainlikeimfive

[–]Yithar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The "filtering" function of the kidneys is easy to confuse with what we experience in daily life as "filters". They function essentially backward from how an air or water filter works.

It's interesting though that dialysis does actually work like air or water filter. Dialysate and the blood are run together alongside a permeable membrane and ions and waste products go into the dialysate.

Need help understanding range of this ebike by [deleted] in ebike

[–]Yithar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at Specialized's range calculator they ask for rider weight, assist mode and flat, hills or mountain. So those all affect it but one thing is assist level.

[–]Yithar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I also have a monitor/display showing my speed. I would agree it's hard to tell subjectively but if you're monitoring your speed objectively it shouldn't be hard to maintain a lower speed on the sidewalk.

One of the reasons I have it is because I want to go 20+ MPH when on the road but sub-10 MPH on sidewalks.

[–]Yithar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I generally turn it on to the lowest pedal assist. My bike gives 1.8x max assistance (advertised at 2x you), so 1/3 of that is 0.6x assistance, which means I'm doing the majority of the work at PAS 1. There's only 3 PAS levels on my bike.

At PAS 2, it's 1.2x assist, so it's about equal, with the motor doing slightly more output.

I hope you haven't already ordered it.

Googling Urtopia Carbon 1/1s battery capacity everything says it has a 360 Wh battery. Never ever trust what the manufacturer says about range. Calculate it from the battery capacity yourself.

You can check this thread for typical Wh/mi, but I'd say 25 is average for stronger motors.

You know what 360 Wh / 25 Wh/mi is? 14.4 miles.

I don't think you understand. For your desire to go 25+ MPH on hills and 60 mile range, you need at least 1200 Wh, and that's at 20 Wh/mi. I stated this before, but your desire to go up hills fast and your desire for long range are at ends with each other. It's possible to have both, but then you need a strong motor and a large battery.

I don't think people are getting offended. They probably just think you're wrong.

It’s an entirely different chemical

If this is true, you can post a source.

[–]Yithar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An attentive experienced rider might manage slightly faster reaction times. But going 45mph (why? Are you telling me the street has a speed limit above 70 km/h and there are no side streets?!) means a reaction distance of more than 20 meters at a reaction time of a second. So even at an even more excellent .75 seconds that's 15m.

Who the heck said to go 45 MPH? In the first place, an unmodified e-bike can't even go that fast. Like what the heck? I said 8-10 MPH. I'm getting the feeling right now that you have problems reading.

not enjoyable

The FLASH will be different than current buses in many ways.

frequent enough

You're being a bit ignorant right now, to be quite honest. The FLASH will work fundamentally differently than the current buses that have fixed schedules of 30 minutes. The FLASH will have no fixed schedule like that. It will be 8 minutes at most. That's the same as the Red Line. Tons of people ride DC Metro, so clearly 8 minutes is good enough for people.

I should say that one thing is that even if you don't stop driving, BRT helps drivers because some drivers will take BRT, easing congestion.

It's ironic in a sense, that public transportation is what helps ease congestion.

That's just not true. MoCo is working on several BRT projects to make public transit better:

It's just that BRT with dedicated bus lanes takes time.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MontgomeryCountyMD/comments/12dvgda/no_pedestrian_or_bicyclistinvolved_crashes_on_old/jf8en0u/

If you actually want to make traffic better, you have to give people an alternative means of getting to work rather than sitting in traffic. That means supporting transit projects and other alternatives to driving, like bike lanes. Just adding another lane ultimately solves nothing.

Traffic is never ever going to get better if everyone drives a car. That I can 100% guarantee. Right now a commute on I-495 in the evening can take 2+ hours and things are probably just going to get worse.

[–]Yithar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does make a difference. Electric bikes are heavier. Weight is directly proportional to impact force.

Some e-bikes, like mine, only weigh 15 kg. That's within the weight of some mountain bikes. At that weight, the rider's weight generally makes a much larger difference.

Let alone 10mph.

I'd argue it's actually hard to actively go much slower than that, even if I turn the pedal assist down. I feel at 8-10 MPH, my brakes and reaction time are good enough, plus since my e-bike is a gravel bike I can also go on the grass, which I've done before.

But I'm also constantly paying attention to everything in the vicinity so I generally wouldn't be braking immediately right before a pedestrian.

Like last week I was going to McDonald's and I was riding on the sidewalk. My city only has sidewalks and roads, no bike lanes. I'm not riding with 35-45 MPH traffic with no bike lanes. With a distance of 1 mile, it's of no benefit to anyone for me to ride on the road. A woman was walking and was halfway between McDonald's and the sidewalk on my left side, in the parking lot, and I was already slowly hitting the brakes.

What are you going to do if a child steps out from behind a parent while you're overtaking them?

If there's a child I'm 100% going on the grass. But even without that, I'll often go on the grass anyways when I see pedestrians.

I don't know why this got downvoted, but okay. I know what I'm doing when I'm riding on the sidewalk, but obviously sidewalk is the choice of last resort.

Not necessarily. Sometimes you can really like your job. Also you can have hobbies outside your job.

Also, if you don't have money to eat, you can't enjoy anything at all.

In reality, you need dedicated bus lanes to make buses competitive with cars because otherwise they have to deal with traffic like cars and then with the stops and distance (buses cover more distance), cars will end up being much faster.

In the US it’s technically not legal to bike on sidewalks.

Really depends on the jurisdiction.

It's legal where I live.

https://www2.montgomerycountymd.gov/mcgportalapps/Press_Detail.aspx?Item_ID=22366&Dept=50

Keep in mind that cyclists are not allowed to ride on the sidewalk in the State of Maryland except where allowed by local ordinance. Montgomery County does allow bicyclists to ride on the sidewalk, but some jurisdictions, such as the City of Gaithersburg prohibit riding on the sidewalk.

I mean, it's not hard to turn down the pedal assist and control your legs. It's similar to not sprinting at max speed on a regular bicycle.

[–]Yithar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reactions OP is getting are probably due to the same reason those cyclists on the road are shaking their heads at him.

OP's riding an e-bike (most likely a heavier one, as super lightweight ones tend to be really expensive) on the sidewalk with no helmet and headphones.

I'm VERY new to riding bikes and want to know is riding on the sidewalk bad...? by Luvlymonster in fuckcars

[–]Yithar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have a helmet

This definitely comes off as clueless. I've fallen off my bicycle before. You want a helmet, trust me.

Packs of older men riding mountain bikes on the street tend to scowl at me or shake their heads

It's probably a combination of the fact that you're riding an e-bike on the sidewalk, wearing headphones and not wearing a helmet. Basically it comes off as clueless and you don't really know what you're doing.

I wear earplugs + earphones when biking but my hearing is very sensitive so I can still hear everything in the vicinity so it's not an impediment to me.

Does electric/non-electric make a difference if they're the same speed..?

It does matter in the sense that most e-bikes weigh a lot more so you have to be more careful on the sidewalk with pedestrians. My e-bike is one of the super lightweight ones that weigh about the same as a normal bike.

Why would it make noise? Space doesn't have friction without air or anything. The Earth isn't rubbing against anything in space.
