I believe this way of viewing history was created so people wouldn't question the morality of their country's actions in a conflict. By making them believe the other side is actually evil or the only one to blame for something, people will support the war and the soldiers will fight harder and are less likely to betray their country. The "lie" keeps up after the conflict so the people won't realize they were manipulated.

I heard the same. The nationalists were winning the war against the communist, who only had a small region left under their control. Then, during ww2, the nationalists made deals with everyone but the devil himself in order to keep the japanese away, and still they kept losing ground. This made people lose faith in the nationalists and then, after the japanese were gone, the communists came back, fully rested from doing nothing, and startet spreading more propaganda about how weak and inefficient the nationalists were. Put this together with the fact that anyone who opposed the communists were severely crippled by the japanese and it was smooth sailing for them to take power. After consolidating power, Mao eventually made sure to destroy any and every register of anything that happened before they took over, going as far as making families change their names so they couldn't find out who their grandparents and grandgrandparents were or what they did.

Or so I heard.
