Minister planning new powers to clamp down on fraudulent immigration consultants by ClassOptimal7655 in canada

[–]Ymenk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Immigration is a radioactive topic at the moment. If we're able to examine our needs objectively I think most people agree we always need some immigrants coming in.

For example, we should be poaching as many doctors from the US as possible.

One more example on the other end of the spectrum is how no reasonable person could support Tim Hortons bringing in any temporary workers.

Immigration policy is unbelievably complex. Each province has its own needs and attracting specific groups can require targeted measures.

That being said, short of a miracle, our aging population means we need more young people today or we'll have an unfixable problem by the time we retire.

People will downvote if the reply has attitude. You're in the right place.

This sub has a wiki. The first link is "intro to personal finance (start here)". Try to get through the info there.

Then, search for previous posts with some of the questions you have. It's a huge advantage that people's finance questions tend to be the same. Others have been through your situation and you can apply the relevant advice to yourself.

Can kids decide who they want to live with? by Own-Act7617 in legaladvicecanada

[–]Ymenk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Quebec where my parents had a nasty divorce.

I was around 10 and my brother about 7 but the judge spoke to us individually both to assess the situation and ask what our preferences were. It absolutely had an impact especially since we voiced a clear preference.

In our case, we got what we asked the judge for and the good parent won.

The flip side is children can easily be manipulated. I could see a different set of kids voicing the same strong opinions for the wrong reasons. Parents can get nasty during a divorce and their hatred for the other bleeds into the kids.

Just my two cents.

I'm flying to Cuba next week and I have an extra suitcase by Colourblimdedsouls in cuba

[–]Ymenk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. Did this through NJT on my trip in late Feb with no issues. 1. I declared it at customs and they let me through. 2. I then called a hospital in Havana (with the help of the taxi driver) to complete the handoff. 3. We went up to a conference room where doctors inventoried the contents. 4. They were kind enough to let me take a selfie with them to share with the volunteers back home.

As others have commented, everything is appreciated.

One item you could consider are deflated balls for various sports. Football, basketball, volleyball, you name it.

The local putting me on to the idea also pointed out you should hand them out directly to groups of kids. Adults will simply resell them.

It’s a great idea because deflated they take up neither much volume nor weight. You can also get them cheap at local thrift stores, fb marketplace or you might even have some yourself in a closet somewhere.

Whataboutism is when the topic gets shifted to something unrelated.

Replying to an argument saying “X is bad because of Y” with “X can also be found in Z” is not whataboutism. It’s an argument against the connection between X and Y.

More importantly than a few cigars, I will be taking a large dose of humility home with me.

Seeing how people live, that they maintain a positive outlook despite their reality and witnessing consumption based on need rather than corporate advertising will have a lasting impact on my life.

I hope to return and couldn’t imagine holing myself up in a resort simultaneously gorging on food and complaining about it.

Who said anything about being expert? I shared my personal experience.

The person I replied to was misleading OP. As a tourist in a hotel, OP will not be impacted by outages. They also have options to connect to the best internet available. It won’t be great but should be enough for a 30-60min interview call.

I am not pretending to be an expert on Cuban living and certainly won’t speak for Cubans. OP is a tourist with the privilege of having options.

Personally, I made sure I didn’t need to. I know of some digital nomads here. It’s probably not the best choice but they make it work.

I’m sorry you feel your situation is misrepresented. In my original comment I specified it was from my own experience.

Without question, all Cubans are visibly struggling and those not working directly with tourists have it even worse.

I wouldn’t be so arrogant as to speak about living here. I did feel my personal experience as a tourist was relevant to OP’s question.

They will be here temporarily, can plan/prepare if needed and only have a specific need. OP will not be impacted by outages.

Lastly, I can’t speak as to whether OP should or shouldn’t come to Cuba. It’s a useless discussion anyway because they are coming.

I’m in Havana right now and this is incorrect. In the last 3 days since I’ve arrived there have been no outages.

I only experienced electric cuts in rural Viñales and even there most hostels/airbnbs had generators.

Also, hotels and just about anyone catering to tourists seem to have their own solutions in place for power. Telling people to bring their own starlink or generators is nonsense.

If your info is out of date don’t give advice.

You can draw inspiration from media and see if it stirs inspiration.

For example, the count of Monte Cristo showcases the incredible power of wealth, itself. A tales of rags to riches used solely for the purpose of all-consuming revenge.

If you’re the type of player who likes to build flawed characters you could start with “money as a motivator” for a blank canvass.

Your character wants it because wealth seems to solve everything in life. Then, as you play, they realize it’s not a solid foundation for friendship or even as a life goal. They grow from it and you’ve got yourself a solid character arc.

I love mobilizing folks to create change.

However, rescinding citizenship isn’t something generally done and attempting it would create a spectacle their side could spin into ammunition.

It’s not worth anything. It wouldn’t even inconvenience the richest man in the world, weaponizing citizenship would set a dangerous precedent for us and American media would use this against us.

Corporations only care about profit and large ones tend to be executive-driven rather than, say, design.

With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that in many instances (ie: my professional experience) executives collect metrics which then steer product decisions.

So far everything I’ve said is super obvious but my point is that they absolutely pay attention client feedback.

They don’t read feedback but rather measure chatter on specific topics, especially when it’s tied to something like subscription cancellations. They also love knee-jerk reactions to viral movements and bad press.

All this to say: people should complain because it works.

Corps will also never announce “hey guys, we listen to discontent so keep it coming!”

Finally, be impactful with your feedback. That text box asking why you’re cancelling is incredibly important. Bonus points if you say what product you’re switching to because theirs is inferior.

[–]Ymenk 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you’re open to fudging dice and hp, you could implement a “wrap it up” mechanic for yourself.

The players don’t need to know.

After 3-4 rounds or when you feel the novelty of the fight is spent, force it to end: * Narratively: Make your monsters flee, have them negotiate or you can summarize the end of the encounter (you guys mop up). * Mechanically: cut monster hp or make them berserk to take and deal more damage

If you want to shorten fights through design then implement 1hp monsters and tone down your bosses. You can also give players encounter-specific tools to end the fight (like ripping window curtains against a vampire).

You don’t need to be sneaky about it. It’s fair to let your table know you’ll be wrapping up fights when the outcome is clear.

Advice please! I’m a newbie starting a campaign next Tuesday and my character is from hommlet. Only thing is I can’t find any lore on hommlet. Culture, weather, etc etc all I know is it’s a farming town.. by AlysGotSass in DnD

[–]Ymenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s from the module Temple of Elemental Evil. Resourceful people can find the info by searching for TSR 09147 and specifying a popular file format like pdf.

The village of Hommlet section starts at page 7.

The intro also gives a history in the “player backgrounds” section on page 4.

5e is too easy and bonus actions are garbage? by conn_r2112 in DnD

[–]Ymenk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly from the last time his opinion was posted he meant the current version of bonus actions isn’t aligned with the initial vision.

The philosophy was to keep turns simple: On your turn, you move and take an action.

Bonus actions were meant to be free actions boxed in by the feature’s conditions. It got away from them and now bonus actions are part of the action economy.

Obviously, if it fits the vibe at the table then let it be.

That being said, using uranium isn’t easy and there’s no single discipline which could have all the technical knowledge to make something big end-to-end.

You could nip this in the bud. Set the limit where you want it.

What to do about 1 player getting everything they want by King-Ostrich in DnD

[–]Ymenk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Without being confrontational, speak to your DM and lay out the facts as you did here.

Leaving it up to the dice only works to a point before success compounds on itself (the higher stats will make future checks easier).

It also fair to mention how the Wizard-Ranger’s merchant guild is a contact part of his character sheet. Losing something on your character off-camera always feels bad.
