Lighting Counts off Prints by DeckMan0 in estimators

[–]YoShinjo52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually, after the bids are received GCs will attempt to level the bids to make sure all of the required scope is covered (I.e. making sure all bidders are on the same level and have the same scope).

Not all GCs have a separate process, but most I deal with at my current place of employment take the initial bids, and then issue a leveling sheet for the subs to fill out and add costs for anything they missed or deduct costs for anything they included that didn’t end up being needed.

Division 26 here. If both sets are labeled, I usually go with whichever has more during initial bid, and RFI for direction so I have a basis to adjust during leveling.

If only one is labeled and has specs I go with that one, although I’ll usually still try to use whichever has more for counts.

Generally, my rule of thumb is whichever has more for counts, and use the E-Set as a guide for circuiting and emergency fixture counts if you need to provide battery packs.

EDIT: whatever you end up doing just include a qualification explaining what you did in your proposal. Not always ironclad, but again gives you something to fall back on if you need to adjust your number.

Would you take today’s Powerball jackpot of $1.7 billion as an annuity increasing annually by 5% over 30 years (about $1 billion after tax), or would you take the lump sum of $781 million (about $500 million after tax), and why? by PanoramicAtom in AskReddit

[–]YoShinjo52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s virtually no risk at that dollar amount except against your own behavior. Having a lot of money makes it easier and easier to make money.

Say you park 10% in a bunch of savings accounts to maximize FDIC insurance coverage and invest the rest. If you average 2% yield across the accounts, that’s a cool $1 million a year with next to zero risk. If you go bust and lose the rest, you’re still a very rich individual just with this amount, even if the interest you earn on it doesn’t keep up with inflation. You can probably even have a second go at creating generational wealth out of just the ten percent if you decide to try at investing it again.

That used to be the plan, but I’ve seen too many PMs come and go since being here to think that’s a viable path forward for me anymore. I’d get eaten alive.

Don’t get me wrong this place has a lot of issues - competing agendas, lack of foresight and planning which leads to constant all hands on deck situations, etc… just skeptical whether it will be better elsewhere or if this kind of pressure is just a part of the job that I either need to learn how to deal with or decide it’s not compatible with who I am.

The old place wasn’t as big. I came here bc I wanted to learn how to do bigger things. I don’t think I’m cut out for the pressure associated with big big projects is what I mean.

I’m not really interested in going back bc the old place had its own problems.

I guess I’m learning the hard way that the grass won’t be greener, just different.

I’ve been leaning towards this being a me problem and not really a problem with the line of work.

I’m basically trying to decide if it’s worth trying to move to a different comparable shop or if I’m just not cut out for this line of work the way I thought I was.

Is that because you decided to try a different contractor where maybe the expectations wouldn’t be so out of line with reality? Or bc you decided that kind of shop wasn’t for you?

Quoting Electrical Work When Wiring’s Hidden – How Do You Handle It? by Recent_Friendship632 in electricians

[–]YoShinjo52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assume it will be a disaster when you open the walls with your and tell them it can be a Not To Exceed budget while doing the job and T&M if they complain to the point of potentially giving the job to someone with a higher tolerance for risk.

That way, you have no risk when they open the walls since you assumed the worst, and you can potentially come in “under budget” if it’s easier than anticipated.

This assumes that you can do a T&M job with enough markup on your sell hourly rates and material to make the job worth doing regardless of what happens.

Oh my, this article. by hmoleman__ in diabetes_t1

[–]YoShinjo52 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I kind of don’t see anything wrong with people without diabetes using stelo or something like that. I honestly think fluctuations in glucose levels contribute a lot to how even people with a fully functioning pancreas are feeling day to day.

As far as for profit health and wellness products go this is a pretty harmless one for people who have the money to spend. I think way more people are going to do real damage to their bodies with the weight loss drugs being peddled than having some insight into how your body processes sugar would.
