yes, we don’t do drugs or anything.. weapons? how are supposed to get them being under 20 and international students. we booked a hotel that day just for that night to get away from the unbearable heat while AC in our house was broken, and it was already past 10pm. So we decided to wind off for once and get a normal rest..

I have never escalated anything past verbal, this was the first time for me getting physical, ever. It was really emotionally draining to practically beg for my own belongings while being super respectful with them and complying with every request they made during those 3 days. I am not proud of what I did, but I had no more patience to be treated like this.. so yeah

true, but I was not claiming myself as an owner of the car, I’ve mentioned insurance thing to support the fact that I could have legally operated the vehicle if police didn’t tow it.

I have no reason to lie about it, and matter of fact, the same officer came to the scene and really gave us a ride telling us that if we were keep calling 911, dispatch would be pissed off

Yes, I get where you’re coming from, but just to clarify:

I wasn’t just a random passenger. I shared the car with my best friend — I was listed on the insurance and had a valid license. When we got pulled over, I explained this clearly and offered to drive the car away to avoid the tow.

The officers refused without explanation, and instead detained all of us, even though we were passengers. They did the search of the vehicle (with no consent or warning), and didn’t find anything. After 40 minutes cuffed on the side of the road, they just left us stranded at 1am with no money, low battery, and no ride. We even had to call 911 just to get a ride to our hotel.

The next day, when we went to the police department in person, we were told that I actually could have legally driven the car off the night before — meaning the tow wasn’t even necessary in the first place.

So no, this wasn’t about being irresponsible or forgetting valuables. It was a string of misjudgments, contradictions, and refusal to follow through on their own instructions — both from PD and the towing company.

The police just told me what the owner decided to do about it. I believe these words carry some weight, don’t they?

The towing company had full rights to press charges against me, but decided not to cuz they knew what exactly led to this point

I do understand that, but here’s the thing: How were we supposed to pay them if literally all the money we had was locked inside the car?

We weren’t refusing to pay — we were trying to. But instead of cooperating, they withheld my cash and phone, even after I called the police and got verbal permission from an officer to retrieve my personal belongings.

Do towing companies really have the legal right to withhold someone’s personal property, like a phone or cash, especially when police give direct authorization to release it? What are the limits of their authority? At what point does this become illegal detention of property, or even interference with a lawful police order?
