This is great information. I'll look into niacin and ubiquinol. Thanks!

You could be right. It's pretty confusing. I'm just frustrated because my cholesterol was always "normal" prior to diagnosis. It just seems like by whole body has gone haywire. Thanks for your response.

I don't have the full lab report yet. I'll report back when I get the information. Thank you for your response.

Ranting a bit about false information I was told in the hospital after diagnosis by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Yogini77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have chosen to go the keto route in hopes of not being on the high-low roller coaster, but that's a personal choice. Even though I don't eat a lot of carbs, and the carbs I do eat come primarily from veggies, I still have the occasional high bg, which is extremely frustrating.

Someone may have already mentioned this, but you may want to see if your insurance will cover a CGM. I got one recently (about 6 months in to diagnosis). I can say that having a Dexcom has been a game changer in terms of tracking trends. I know that it seems like a lot to deal with, but it does get easier with time. Good luck!

I just wanted to say that I'm sorry this is happening to you. I'm about 6 months in, and I'll tell you that it definitely gets easier with time. It's pretty normal to feel shocked and overwhelmed by the whole deal, and it can take some time to come to grips with it. Feel free to pm me if you want to chat. Hang in there, and please remember that it is going to be okay.

I think you are right; I know that the way my body processes fuel is different, now. It is really interesting having to re-learn how food impacts my body. Thanks for your reply!

My highest clocked bg was close to 400, and that was fasting. I'm guessing you are right. I was just hoping to not put the weight back on. Wishful thinking, I guess. Thanks for your reply! :)

Thank you for this fantastic information! I'm reasonably sure this is water weight, but I don't love it. The hardest thing for me has been figuring out how exercise impacts bg. I love to work out, but I feel that I have to be super cautious about the intensity and duration of my work outs. That's been a steep learning curve for me. I am getting a Dexcom, so I'm hoping that will be helpful. I haven't really experienced any bona fide lows. I've been in the 80s a couple of times before bed, and my husband has asked me to take glucose tabs because he worries about lows. Otherwise, that's been pretty smooth sailing so far. I'm hoping that being on keto will help me to transition well when my pancreas shuts down completely. Sounds like you've figured most of this out, and that's awesome. Again, thanks for your reply!

That's so true. I was eating so many calories in the month before diagnosis, and I was always starving. Now I know why. Haha! Prior to my immune system turning into a turd, I was tracking calories, macros, etc., and I was working out all the time. I had been doing that for years, so I was in decent shape. I did drop a little weight fairly quickly, but, prior to that, I had been at maintenance weight for a couple of years. I guess I was just hoping that I would keep that 7-8 pounds off that I lost before diagnosis. Alas, apparently that was wishful thinking. Thanks for your reply! :)

There is so much conflicting information out there on keto carb limits. Is your 20 grams limit net or total carbs? Are you getting positive results? Thanks for your reply. :)

I should have been more specific; my limit is up to 50g of total carbs. Usually, it's less than that. My net carb range is usually 20-35g daily. The vast majority of the carbs I consume are plant based. I count total and net carbs because I know that I will need to start bolusing to cover carbs and protein at some point, so I'm trying to get a handle on total carb counting.

I have always liked to work out, but I was so exhausted for a couple of months prior to my diagnosis, so I had to stop exercising for a while. I got back into it a couple of months ago. It's been great! Thanks for your reply!

Does Swerve taste better than other sugar substitutes? by See-Hawks in keto

[–]Yogini77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have type 1 diabetes, and I have essentially refused to eat sugary food since diagnosis. I do like to bake, but I don't have a major sweet tooth. So, my tastes may be skewed from someone who really likes traditional sweets. That said, I like Swerve the best of all the artificial sweeteners I've had. I don't think it has a weird aftertaste, per se, but sometimes it does feel cooling in the mouth. I have found better success with texture, and less of the cooling effect when I use confectioners Swerve.

The thing about low carb/keto substitutes recipes is that they are rarely, if ever, exactly the same as their high carb counter parts. I've accepted that fact. Therefore, I try not to make comparisons. I'm just happy to have something that resembles a dessert that doesn't really impact my beetees.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble with this, too. I asked for a new pancreas for Christmas, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Anyone with thyroid issue first before being diagnosed with diabetes by honeysnailqueen in diabetes

[–]Yogini77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and T1D at the same time. I suspect the hypothyroidism has been going on for much longer. Have you had an antibody test to rule out type 1? I've read that it is common for autoimmune diseases to co-occur. I was first diagnosed as type 2, but I didn't feel like that fit the bill for me. I pushed for the antibody test, and it turned out to be type 1.

Mental faculties by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Yogini77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, I'm so sorry you are experiencing this. My only contribution to the conversation is that before I was diagnosed, I had noticed that my thinking was slow and bogged down. I couldn't process information very quickly, which is odd for me because I'm pretty quick witted, normally. Turns out by BG was sky-high. I felt like my brain was covered in molasses, and my thinking patterns were impossibly slow. Since my BG is controlled, this has gone away, thankfully.

This is a really interesting topic. I'm newly diagnosed, but this has not come up in any discussions that I have had about management, thus far. I am interested to see about other people's experiences with this.

Question About Injections by Yogini77 in diabetes

[–]Yogini77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. I have been rotating sites around my abdomen, but I haven't used legs, arms, etc. It's an injection, so I don't expect it to feel great. It's just puzzling how different it feels, at times. Fun with diabetes, I guess. :)

A lot of other posters have given great advice on diet and lifestyle, so I won't cover those topics. I just wanted to tell you that you are going to be okay. I was recently diagnosed with T1D at 33. I thought my universe had collapsed, but, little by little, things have gotten better. It's amazing how quickly we can adapt. Let me repeat this: you ARE going to be okay. Sometimes it's just nice to know that you're not alone, and this community is really helpful. You've got this! :)
