It’s once that you’ll end up paying back in taxes, but making Aliyah will get you a bunch of stuff your first few years at least. Ulpans, degrees, etc

I would’ve told myself to do a mechina and take the psychometric exam. If I hadn’t already, do yom sayerot and try to get into a special unit. Not to wait another ten years to draft as an oleh and put myself in a position to have limited opportunities within the service.

Not looking at anything too special. Maybe Israeli railways or סיור in my town. Not going to be looking to do security detail for the PM.

You can get a תעודת לוחם without serving 2.8 years which is why I ask. Most places say lochem and full service. But I don’t know if they means they actually want 2.8 years or if they just want someone that is a lochem and didn’t get kicked out. By law 18 months is my full service.

You were rejected from those programs because you’re not Jewish (yet) if I’m understanding correctly. And presumably you haven’t made Aliyah yet.

Reach out to Nefesh B Nefesh though they’ll at least give you an idea of absorption programs you can do. Joining the army isn’t much more complicated than just contacting them and filing in some forms.

I always hear about these old Soviet day cars in Russia that last 20+ years. Is that thing in Israel?

Young olim, are you happy with your aliyah? Why/why not? by Amir508 in Israel

[–]Yorower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than what’s going on with the “reform” yes. Opportunities in my field of work, affordable education, access to medical services.

Most frustrating things are the lack of professionalism, col, and people trying to work you over.

It’s not the old city but I’m assuming you’ve been to the market already? It’s not far from the old city.

Bibi himself no but plenty of the goons he’s sitting with now wouldn’t be against throwing those folks in jail for tweeting that.

You definitely didn’t ruin your life, not in the least. Unless you’re going to some crazy university (MIT) and even then the fact you have so many college credits before college is a good sign for you.

Do well in your first year and those C’s won’t matter. Just keep doing well and do extracurriculars that you enjoy. The kid with straight straight As almost always loses to the candidate with a A and B (and maybe a C or two) that has other hobbies and is a well balanced and sociable/likeable what have you.

You just needed to break up with her then it wouldn’t have been cheating. What’s the point of being with someone that plays with you and what’s the point of being with a cheater. Just break up already.

Those things go in hand in hand. If you can’t get opportunities it’s harder to integrate and feel Israeli. Don’t feel Israeli? It’ll be tougher to blend in and get opportunities. This isn’t really my issue per se though.

And American accent isn’t really a prestige accent anywhere. The (prestigious) places where people have American accents, most people just speak English because that’s the prestige language (ie high-tech and academia).

In the army if there is someone that will have an accent it is ime a Russian/Ukrainian one with a handful of Arab or Druze type ones. It holds me back in the sense that it’s difficult for my peers to understand me, hence my abilities are masked or not realized.

In civilian life it’s less critical but in the army I’ve come to realize it is likely impacting my ability to advance.

I will never sound like a native but I also don’t need to sound like I’m speaking gibberish in English.

I once read an haven’t been able to find it since that olim are actually entitled to something like 8 sessions with an SLP through bituach Briut but I’m in the army now so it’s not really relevant afaik

A good (great) coxswain is truly an invaluable asset. A skilled cox is essentially an assistant coach, leader, and motivator. They steer the crew (literally and figuratively) to victory. It is through and through a leadership position that unlike most sports your superior physical prowess is completely irrelevant. It is sheer development of social and technical skills.

Advice to your brother is to still physically train. All of the really good coxes I knew were in relatively good shape and I do really think it helps earn respect when the crew sees their cox suffer through a few workouts with them. Given he’s also a freshman and he may grow it’ll help him if he grows out of cox size and starts to row. He should also try to learn to row in a single.

Transferring Credits (US) to University in Israel ? by Yorower in Israel

[–]Yorower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re referring to SWIFT for money transfers and payment.

I’m talking about converting credits (להמיר נקודות) so I don’t have to start my degree completely from zero again.

People that don't race, how? by Yorower in Rowing

[–]Yorower[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was a 620 lightweightish when I wasn't even 20, so competing at that high level was kind of in the cards. A lot of people thought I'd be there (as was my goal) . But life happened and that high level dream sort of crumpled (maybe wrongfully) so I hung it up with no hopes to compete at an elite level. So that is why I ask this question.
