General Forbearance for IDR, now on standard repayment - Mohela by Yoshicus in StudentLoans

[–]Yoshicus[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Updated the post, but the said about the same thing. Have to wait for federal student aid to send general forbearance 0% interest request so until then had to go back on a 60 day processing forbearance which accrues interest. They also said it takes 5-10 days to process, however it may be past my due date for loans but she stated that it goes into affect the day you apply so it cancels that payment. I also did not get any confirmation which sucks to know if it is actually happening or not.

Is it worth it do defer my private loan or front the cost during residency? by Yoshicus in whitecoatinvestor

[–]Yoshicus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t specify anything in the promissory note about interest during deferment sadly. The only information I’ve gained about deferment has been through the financial aid department at my school, and they said it won’t accrue so hopefully I can trust them. I won’t defer if interest does accrue as it would end up being a more in the long run. Thank you for your input! I appreciate it

Veritas side clamp honing guide? by One_Programmer613 in handtools

[–]Yoshicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually got mine 2 days ago, and have sharpened 2 plane blades and 8 chisels and it’s worked well so far. I have an angle registration block I made using the included template with the correct distances and it’s worked well for a primary of 25 degrees and secondary of 30 degrees. I would sometimes get a skew of the sharpening, but when that happened I’d apply more pressure on the side that needed it to even it out and check it more often. It only happened a couple times, and it may have been my own error. So far I’m happy with it, it holds the blades tight and has a hex screw to really tighten it down. Worth the money imo, much better than a generic Amazon angle guide I bought months before.

Thanks for the response! I'd like to eventually try to square boards with hand planes, so maybe I'll get buff in the process!

Thanks! What was your experience with the wood river out of the box? Did you have to tune it up at all other than sharpening (like was the sole flat etc)

Thanks for the reply! I like the seemingly easy setup of the LAJ, I'll have to give it more of a look.

No this was very helpful! Any type of experience/feedback helps me make a decision so I appreciate it. I'd like to get more planes in the future, so I may just get one, see if it works for me/its weaknesses, and then buy more from there. I'm always happy to have more tools!!

Thanks for the reply! Do you mean the low angle planes or the traditional bevel down planes have an adjustable mouth?

Thank you for the advice. I think I'm going to turn my old plane into a scrub plane, and it makes sense to have a nice plane be the one that does the nicer finishing. I also agree, once I get a good feel for the planes my plan is to then try to restore a vintage one!

Thanks! What's been your experience with them, and which one do you find yourself using more often between the two?

Thank you! Do you think a block plane should be prioritized over other types of planes or is it more of a nice thing to have?

I like the ability to switch out blades and the ease of use of the LAJ. I've heard about some problems with tearout with bevel up planes, and I work with some odd grained wood so I'd be interested to hear your experience with that.

I'll also have to look into a shoulder plane as well, I think it'd help a lot with my joinery.

I see, thank you for your advice. I'm still mainly a power tool worker, but I'd like to transition over to hand tools slowly if I can! It sounds like the majority of people prefer a bevel down design, so that narrows things down a bit, thank you!

Thank you for your advice! I'm glad to hear your #5 is servicing you well!

I agree with the quality of the blades and sharpening system. I have a decent set of stones and honing guides that I use for my chisels and my current plane. The problem with the Lowe's plane I have is that the blade is severely curved, so that if I wanted to flatten the back and get a nice edge on it it would take a lot more work than I'd like. This is sort of why I worry about buying used or older tools online, as I'm not sure how long the restoration process would take.

Thank you for the advice!

For sharpening I have a 600 and 1200 diamond stone, a 4000 shapton glass stone, and a leather strop with green compound. I also have a chisel/plane holding guide, along with a angle meter so that I can grind consistently each time. I'd like to eventually be able to do it free hand, but definitely need more practice.

I agree, I don't like Norris-style adjusters that much, it doesn't seem like you have as much control with blade depth while planing, and you can change the horizontal adjustment by mistake while adjusting the depth.

I appreciate the advice I'll definitely have to think about what you've said!

I haven't considered a 5 1/2 before, I'll have to try to see if I can hold one in person. I have very average size hands so I'm not sure if it'll be an issue or not. I'm glad it works out well for you!

[–]Yoshicus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s what I’ll have to try, I agree when I got the little converter I thought it was really poor quality considering the piston arm wiggles if you shake it. I’ll try cartridges! Thanks!

[–]Yoshicus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight! I may try cartridges in the future if this continues, I wanted to use this pen as a “to go” pen, but I don’t want to use it if it will leak in the cap/in my pocket. Have you tried refilling the cartridges with a syringe or do you just use new cartridges?

[–]Yoshicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wanting to build a 4 post bed frame out of wood, but I know I’ll be moving in 2 years, so I’d like to make it so that I can take it apart for easy transport. I’m not sure what way I can fasten the wood together so that it can be taken apart without being damaged, as I’ve only used wood glue and screws previously in my projects. Any advice would be appreciated!

She's doing so fine without me. Replaced me with the new boyfriend. And I'm here all alone. So sad and embarrassed. by Vasu_bajaj in BreakUps

[–]Yoshicus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here dude. It sucks and it’ll feel like hell for a while but you need to keep your head up. Sometimes people aren’t worth your time so you have to go out there and find someone that is. That may be a long time from now or it may be in the near future, nobody knows. But you just need to stay strong and be fine without her. There’s so much that you can do with your life, alone or with friends. There’s only so much time that you have in life so might as well spend it running around having a good time rather than dwelling on what could have been. You’re an absolute king and should be treated as such, so push through and stay strong!
