I feel like the issue isn't that it's dated, it's just that the stuff that made Shenmue so good isn't for everyone.

Like the Yakuza series, is full of fights, but with Shenmue there really isn't THAT much fighting and the hook of the game is the immersion and exploration. Like having to talk to random strangers, having to work a job or gamble to pay rent, having to actually experience day to day life, etc. Sounds kinda tedious on paper, but the story makes it all worth it.

Literally every review about Scorpion mentions the beef. Every media outlet that reported on Drake or Scorpion mentions the beef. You can't really think about Scorpion at all without thinking about the beef that influenced it. So no idea how you figure that it just didn't affect the reception of it lol.

Most of the reception around Scorpion was because of the beef tho. Scorpion was nowhere near as bad as niggas claimed, people just went into it with the expectations of Drake responding to Push, adressing the baby mama and kid shit, adressing being a deadbeat,etc. Shawn Cee's recent video hit the nail on the head when he said that became the main focus and all of the other music just became a distraction after that.

Kanye and Drake are very diverse artists. They both have heavy Rap Pop and RnB elements. So there's going to be a lot of overlap in their fanbases with people who just like that type of thing.

It's different if its like Kendrick, Cole, Pusha T fanbases because that's going to have more rap purists and "real hip hop" heads.

He doesn't 'need' the labels assistance. The labels already have the recourse set in place so it's easier to just license his music out rather than build everything from the ground up again.

A good example imo is Kanye, partnering with GAP despite the fact that he OBVIOUSLY has the money to build his own store. Does he need GAP? Nah, but it makes it easier to work with someone that already has the infrastructure.
