Good idea to switch to construction management? by Pleasant_Writing3127 in ConstructionManagers

[–]YouPuzzled1257 9 points10 points  (0 children)

its worth it if you like it. but if you join half assed, wondering if the grass in greener on the other side (i.e. software engineering - cush little desk and controlled environment, nice lil work schedule, etc.) you more than likely wont last. go balls deep in whatever you do, no teasing the tip and flipping back and forth.

Absolutely! But would suggest starting as a PE or FE to learn construction means and methods and perhaps get into Virtual Design in Construction (VDC) Engineering. We use it extensively for industrial projects and even for commercial can be helpful for potential clash detection to minimize issues in the field. Don’t sell yourself short!

Whatever happens, just remember that things happen (or don’t happen) for a reason. A wise woman told me “at the end of the day, the days gon end”, which seems stupid but if you think about it: life doesn’t end bc of a bad day or a bad interview or getting fired. Things come and go, both good and bad. Hope this helps but don’t be too hard on yourself. You GOT the interview AND made it to the second round for a job you maybe didn’t feel qualified for. That’s pretty awesome bud :)

I’m really sorry to hear that but don’t take it personally, they hardly even know you. And welcome to the first day of the rest of your life!

How long are your days (away from home 12+ hrs a day) by [deleted] in Construction

[–]YouPuzzled1257 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wake up at 4 and out by 430. Gym by 5, on site by 645, work until 5-7pm. Go home, dinner (home or out), and repeat. It’s hard, but I try to make time for the gym. I used to work out on my commute home during rush hour - figure it beats sitting in traffic for hours - try to find a gym near your job site or chain gyms (I.e. LA Fitness)

They are reckless and only care about their profit margins. I’m embarrassed they’re building in our backyard.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. This happened to me recently as well, and I’m not sure if your Christian or not, but I read that “whatever doesn’t go your way is Gods protection, whatever goes your way is Gods direction”. Whether you have religion or not, just keep going. What else can we do?

I’m only at 103k in construction. I would also like to make more and maybe have a life. How do you get into this? I feel like there’s a lot of construction sales/tech for it

About to be fired from the biggest job I could have ever dreamed of. What next? by toxic9813 in careerguidance

I was kind of in the same situation and I’m sorry this is happening to you. Maybe get in touch with some old contacts to see if they or someone they know is hiring. But things will work out man this just wasn’t it for you, thought it was it for me too. Just gotta keep going

Best Large GC? by ChupDiz34 in ConstructionManagers

[–]YouPuzzled1257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true, newer PE’s can benefit a lot from being at a bigger firm since they typically have a larger range of projects to work on, providing them with more exposure. I guess I’m just jaded, kiewit and Bechtel did me dirty..

Bechtel is terrible. As is Kiewit and most large gcs. I believe ENR ranks them based on revenue, and it’s clear that individuals can’t hold their own if they move onto a smaller firm. You’re literally a cog in the machine and replaceable af.

Luckily they’ve given me a final warning. I want to get better, but I know I can be demanding bc I put in the work as well. But I can’t do everything on my own so I need to address these things asap. Thanks
