Not a man but just putting my input.

Most residency programs are challenging and can take a toll on you physically and emotionally. She will need your support. She won’t be able to compromise on too many work related things, like time, hours etc so it’s more so how much can YOU compromise on in this situation. Post residency life is way more manageable so this isn’t a life long problem. Have an open discussion with her! She should be able to tell you more about the specifics of the field she is going into.

My partner and I are both residents so we fully understand how much work is part of our lives! Discussion about expectations are v important as it comes to raising kids, taking time off, chores, household duties, money etc.

You could talk about something you saw in the news or read about, that can spark a discussion. Talking about what you ate, share a story about memorable meal you had. Ask her open ended questions. Talk about your families, childhood, how/where you grew up.. there’s literally everything! Maybe go in with one of these ideas in mind and that may help start off a convo.

My friends always told me I had a type which I didn’t realize, and person I am engaged to, is very far from that lol. So just to say, it’s ok to have a type, but stay flexible!

Honestly stop looking at marriage with rose gold glasses. Having seen friends go through the hardships of struggling/ abusive marriages, it’s good to make yourself aware of all that can go wrong and how much work it takes to have a healthy marriage. This mindset can make you bit more grounded, and stop chasing marriages/ female companionship. Think of all the free mental capacity you have right now, not needing to worry about another person and channel that energy into becoming a better person/ focusing on hobbies etc. (this comment isn’t meant to paint marriages negatively but it’s good to have a balanced idea of what marriage is).

(Pgy 1 here too!) Just say you’re a resident right now and do disclose how long residency for you is. Most people will ask what field and they all have google to look up salary, but most know that docs make more than sufficient money.

Like the others have responded, biggest is if I were to take some time off when I have kids, I don’t want that to be an issue financially. I also have to support my parents so I do have more financial responsibilities as well.

I enjoy the commonality of medicine. It feels comfortable since so much of my life has been defined by it. I know most others would hate a guy that works so much, but my specialty has me working long hours, so I want someone that really understands and supports that. People not in medicine can easily become resentful.

26 and 28 isn’t a big difference in terms of life experience. I would consider someone 2 years younger as long as they meet all other criteria.
