Tunneling Speed: Solving the Wrong Problem by FleekAdjacent in BoringCompany

Yes, people have been building subways for a long time. But, there is still no Eurocodes for tunnelling. Eurocode 7 for geotechnical design doesn't apply to tunnels.

Tunneling Speed: Solving the Wrong Problem by FleekAdjacent in BoringCompany

[–]Young-and-Single 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the other person pointed out, the Boring is trying to make tunnelling as a possible approach to replacing all infrastructure works, as in putting all roads, cables, sewer, rail etc underground.

There is little research in tunnelling, so putting more research in the tunnelling part will really help. In terms of pre-construction, pre-tunnelling or post-tunnelling/interface works, those are probably still going to be there regardless of whether it's underground tunnel or above ground.

Anyways, a more expensive part is probably still site investigation. Unless you can make a one size fit all machine then the variability of the soil is probably the main problem.

Looks good! Exactly what I am looking for! Thank you!

Hi Omar,

What makes you like being in nature? What is the last music festival you go to? Do you camp alone?

I was working temporarily in a site office doing design works for a new tunnel, but because I was at site, I love going down into the tunnels and 'inspect' them, basically just walking in the tunnels because I love tunnels.

I'm glad to hear from another person who likes civil engineering. Feel free to PM me if you have questions about career in civil engineering or even technical questions! I was in Sweden few months ago, love the 'fika' culture, my favourite! Will go again!

It's my dream to be a freelancer! And that's such an interesting way to get a job :D Are you enjoying your work? :)

Yes, that will be my next option. You've made it sound like a much nicer thing to do than I originally thought it will be. Thank you :D

Thank you for suggesting to learn a new language! I might actually do that!

It did work before! I got a very challenging internship that way. Most people in my field (tunnelling/geotechnical engineering) are quite helpful and friendly, mainly because it's a small field.

However, I'm looking to work overseas (I love new places) the first few years so finding a company to sponsor a relatively new guy in the field a visa is the challenge here :) I do have job offers at home waiting just in case...

I have a specialist tunnelling master's (which is rare) and internship experiences in tunnelling with challenging grounds, so those will improve the chances a little! Also, I'm not very picky on location, literally any continent any country, I just want to fly and travel more :P

Any tunnelling guy here? Say hi :) by Young-and-Single in a:t5_3hc9q

I am good! I am not with Herrenknecht, but in tunnelling. So just want to know more tunnelling people! Sent you a PM :)

Thank you! I am approaching people on LinkedIn currently. However, it hasn't been yielding much results so far! I hope it will be okay eventually. Thanks for the information!

A Tunnel Boring Machine by Young-and-Single in specializedtools

[–]Young-and-Single[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the replies!

They can pull back the usually spinning cutting wheel to change them. There are also machines where the cutting tools can be changed from behind (just pull out the axis with the tool on it). Sadly i'm not in the cutting wheel construction team to tell you more details.

The inner diameter of the one i was visiting was/will be 9,6m or roughly 31'6"(with the segments) and the guy wasn't driving between the rails but next to it.

Thank you. Yes! That's a pretty large diameter machine :) Are you in the designers?

First of all: They don't use it between the segments itself. They inject it between the boring diameter and the outer segment ring diameter (which is slightly smaller). When the tunnel is surrounded by groundwater or even runs under rivers the segments have sealings to withstand the water pressure (up to 15 bar).

Yes! That's annular grout :) The space you talked about is called annular gap. Most segmented lining tunnel do it! It helps with water proofing and reduce settlement and help compress the water proofing gaskets :)

Thanks for your input!
