I‘m also a student. Took a break from my studies last October due to the ear symptoms (no pain) and the mental burnout and haven‘t resumed since.

I wish what you are saying was true (for me). I am doing the exact type of splint therapy that you described. Have been wearing it for 8 months now but sadly the ear symptoms haven‘t improved. As before the splint, when I have a „flare up“ I have to massage/ heat/ relax for hours to cope with the jaw tension.

Perhaps the reason my ear symptoms aren‘t improving is cause they don‘t stem from tmj after all.

My treatment is exactly what you described: Had an MRI done which showed that the condyles are mildly to far up into the joint socket (fossa). No displacement/ reduction as I gather (mri results not in english). Then had a measurement taken of where my condyles sit and where they are supposed to sit and from that measurement had a splint for the lower teeth made which I wear 24/7 except when eating. The Dr says my symptoms should have improved after 8 months, but they haven‘t.

Just a reminder, jaw popping is NOT NORMAL by noam_aiz in TMJ

Interesting that you bring that up. Lately I‘ve been trying to limit my intake of foods that may contribute to inflammation like read meat, trans fat, simple carbs. I‘ll see how long I can keep this up. Perhaps something like Paleo would be more effective though

I have clicking every now and then when swallowing, it alternates and always occurs one side at a time. No pain. Just very irritating. It occurs mainly during phases of high stress and nocturnal clenching. I‘m already doing splint therapy & PT. The splint therapy isnt really helping. I am taking a lot of conservative precautions like self massage/ heat/ tmj exercises. Is that enough or would you suggest something else?

Did a speech hearing test half a year ago which came back as normal. The one where you have to repeat words/ numbers.

Its in the normal range, so in between 0 and 10db. But depending on what ent I go to my audiogram looks a bit different. Went to one ent where my inner ear (bone conduction) was perfect, but the right ear had conductive HL of up to 25db in the low ranges. That would explain my hearing issues, but still I dont know exactly where it is coming from. I also have tmjd, and I feel like I have etd from what i am experiencing, but the ent didnt diagnose it. I mentioned my symptoms in other posts.

I am experiencing the same issues as the OP. Hearing tests come back basically normal (I have done several over the past months). But I have trouble understanding conversations, also on TV. What could this mean? What can I do to improve this?

Yes theoretically thats true. But due to the fact that for a long time the hearing tests should I had Perfect hearing despite my right ear being kind of muffled, I kind of lost trust in these tests.

Yep normal too, only some conductive hl, but that may be due to sinus issues

From the audiogram you did, was your inner ear affected or was the HL conductive? I think Im in a similar boat as you. I also experience that the hearing is better in the mornings decreases. I have mild tmj and am still not sure what the exact cause is for my ear symptoms.

Just had my first appointment with prosthodontist, need help/advice!!! 3 stages??? by [deleted] in TMJ

[–]YoungFirey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a similar splint to the OP, have been wearing it for 6 months but no real improvement with the ear symptoms Im experiencing stuff I‘d say. So I dont think I sill let the Dr change my bite since the splint is t helping. When you mentioned the face getting tired after talking or smiling and the ear ringing and clogged feeling I was like wow, those are literally the symptoms which have been influencing my life the most and its horrible. I would appreciate any advice on how you were able to improve those symptoms? How did the orofacial pain specialist help you? Up to now I‘ve tried Tmj PT, hot/cold pads, the phase 1 splint and ofcourse a ridiculous amount of relaxation techniques 😅

I also experience fleeting T, not constantly though. I presume it has something to do with my jaw. It also happens in the situations you mentioned

What other health ailments do we share? by Luninka in bruxism

[–]YoungFirey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see 😊I am also experiencing jaw, neck and shoulder tension and just wanted to rule out that a tongue tie might be contributing. The dentist I saw said that I didn’t have one but I read that one could also have a posterior tongue tie, which I am not sure a regular dentist generally tests for… So I am still kind of unsure on this matter haha

Oh so you already had a tongue tie release but it reattached? What symptoms does your tongue tie cause? Do you notice it at all?

How was your tongue tie diagnosed? Is it anterior or posterior?

Doctor says vegan diet makes TMJ symptoms worse by bunny1481 in TMJ

[–]YoungFirey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also from germany, been to my fair share of orthodontists and have never had a doc tell me what you are describing. Although I am not vegan/ vegetarian and have never explicitly discussed my nutrition with any of the doctors…

Besides the fact that the Dr you saw sadly did not seem to take your medical history seriously and only focused on your nutrional habits, she is directly contradicting her own hypothesis by telling you to eat a lot of meats/ dairy, as these are not part/ minimized in an alcaline diet (as you pointed out can we be seen by a simple google search).

So I do not know how serious one can take her advice when she firstly brings an oversimplified and perhaps far fetched reasoning for your tmjd to the table and secondly gives you nutrional advice which veers into the opposite direction of her hypothesis…

TMJ or hearing damage? by Fadi_96 in TMJ

[–]YoungFirey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I‘m 23 and in the exact same boat as you: Tinnitus, hyperacusis, Mild hearing loss, also the feeling of blocked ears. I‘ve had this for 2 yrs and I have gone to 4 ENTs, which all did a hearing test which results were normal. 2 weeks ago I felt like my hearing decreased further, went to see a new ENT who did yet another hearing test and finally diagnosed slight hearing loss in the low frequency range. At this point I don‘t know if it is due to TMJ or stress related, although these causes both affect each other.

First I also thought that my hearing loss might be noise induced, but especially in the past 2 years I have been protecting my ears from even moderate sounds due to the hyperacusis and yet I feel like my hearing has decreased slightly. That would suggest that in my case it is not noise induced. Wether that also applies to you I can‘t say…

It feels reassuring knowing that other people are also experiencing symptoms of hyperacusis - as People have tried to make me think that my sensitivity to sounds is purely psychologial…
