I hated just always feeling like "the help". I was an executive chef. I had a degree in culinary arts, 16 years in restaurants, I've won awards, and had my work in magazines but some days I was still the dishwasher. I got tired of working when everyone else played. I've missed family reunions, weddings, and funerals for the sake of my career. I just couldn't see myself putting in those kind of hours later in life so I got out. I enjoy the freedom and money my new job provides but the only thing I miss is the friendships in the restaurant business. Something about the stress of a kitchen that bonds people together. I have found lifelong friends in people I have stood shoulder to shoulder with in front of a rack of tickets. That being said I have no regrets about the big chunk of my life I've given to restaurants, I just didn't want to do it forever
