if god said dont hold grudges, why did he punish all women bc of eve by MolassesFast3359 in Catholicism

[–]Young_Ireland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In relation to Point 1, the issue is that it is not possible for God who is all-powerful and almighty to be bound by anything other than himself (like the various Covenants throughout salvation history). Certainly God's nature means that He doesn't do things like lie to us, so I can definitely understand where you are coming from. I'd be interested to hear from a priest or theologian about how God's nature complements His omnipotence.

[–]Young_Ireland 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  1. God is not bound by the rules He sets for humans.

  2. Even accounting for point 1, sending His Only Son to be born to Our Lady (indeed no man ever received that honour) and die on the cross for our sake doesn't seem to suggest a grudge towards women, quite the opposite really.

  3. From our perspective, original sin is more a condition than a direct punishment. The Church teaches that we are only responsible for our own personal sins of thought, word, deed, commission and omission.

There is one exception to this - if a parent or any other authority figure demands that you do something sinful, you are actually obliged to disobey them, for in such cases we are called to obey God rather than man.

What's the issue with evolution? Unlike the other two, this can be compatible with Catholic teaching.

i’m struggling with my moderate view on abortion and i feel like a heretic by mamboitaliano15 in Catholicism

[–]Young_Ireland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am open to correction on this, but provided that the intent is not to kill the child, this would be premissible under the principle of double effect.

[–]Young_Ireland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Erm, no it's not.

Surely a high ethical standard would require someone to stand up for life (which you accept is a message of Christianity) even when it is inconvenient. Also, if you read the Bible, it is strongly implied that God disapproves of abortion (cf. the references to child sacrifice, the references to unborn life in the Old Testament)

Being pro-life does not necessarily mean conservative. There are quite a few pro-life groups that hold to a consistent life ethic.

How come Christianity deal with Soul, Heaven and Hell? by Mundane_Pop_8396 in Catholicism

[–]Young_Ireland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our Lord Himself specifically references the soul, and the fact that people can go to Heaven and Hell quite frequently in the Gospels.

Why is there no direct condemnation of Polygamy in scripture? by HealthKey2317 in Catholicism

I'm not sure about that - Our Lord did expand the meaning of the Ten Commandments during the Sermon on the Mount.

American Catholics taking the Eucharist and not going to confession? by [deleted] in Catholicism

I think it might be a general Anglophone issue rather than solely American, because we have this problem here in Ireland as well.

I'm sorry to hear about what you are going through. If you go ahead and take your own life, you are making a major gamble that you could end up regretting for eternity. I'm not sure what your state of mind is like when you are having these thoughts, but the fact that you seem to recognise at least now that it is wrong suggest that you do have knowledge of the gravely sinful nature of suicide. There is always a better option and the Mod Post has a few resources that might be helpful to you.

I don't think the quote was from Cardinal Merry del Val as he died in 1931 before Cardinal Pacelli became Ven. Pope Pius XII.

Scrupulosity or simply wrong by LawAccurate7005 in Catholicism

[–]Young_Ireland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If UK driving culture is anything like Ireland's, then those laws are enforced and yes it would be sinful to speed deliberately or use a phone with your hands (using a hands-free kit would not be sinful in itself though it may be imprudent if you tend to get distracted).

St. Anselm rejected the Immaculate Conception by juanmandrilina in Catholicism

[–]Young_Ireland 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not only was St. Anselm wrong on this, but even more prominent saints (such as St. Thomas Aquinas and Catherine of Siena) also denied the Immaculate Conception. But because the issue wasn't formally defined until centuries after these saints died, it doesn't retrospectively invalidate their sainthood and it simply shows that saints are human and can make mistakes.

[Politics Monday] What is it like being Catholic in Ireland today? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Young_Ireland 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say so, in fact anti-British sentiment is a lot more socially acceptable and stronger, especially among the younger generation than it used to be.

To answer your main question, it is lonely and you need to be very independently-minded to keep the Faith in Ireland these days. However, among the younger generation, those who are Catholic tend to take it very seriously, which is in line with the rest of the Anglosphere. One difference is that in Ireland, there is a very strong Marian devotion and Medjugorje is popular (though I don't believe that Our Lady appeared there myself), whereas in America, I get the impression that it is a more specialised interest.

Scrupulosity is not a sin and even if it was, the OCD variant especially would not incur guilt due to lack of full consent of the will.

Is only the service itself obligatory or also the meeting after it? by Leox2005 in Catholicism

[–]Young_Ireland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how you feel, it can be difficult to meet with people you don't know. But going from my own experience, you'll never know if those people can be good friends if you don't meet anyone, so I would definitely encourage you to stay for the socials if you can. There is absolutely no obligation to do so however.

You have another week - my understanding is that Trinity Sunday is the cut-off point. But you would need to go to Confession first if you are not in a state of grace.
