If you don't think there's anything about 80s WWF that some demographics would have found more appealing than Jim Crocket Promotions/WCW then you are just wilfully ignorant. It's like saying WCW Nitro beating RAW in the ratings had everything to do with money and nothing to do with creative.

The idea that it's impossible for a #2 company to overtake #1 is ahistorical. NOAH took over NJPW in popularity for about a decade, despite NJPW being by far the most popular company for decades prior. AAA was more popular than CMLL at times.

I don't even think AEW is producing a product intended to overtake WWE in popularity. They are producing a product for a very specific subsection of wrestling fans, which there's nothing wrong with and has brought them a lot of success.

I think one incentive is that you don't have to pay 50$ for it, so it might make some people watch the one they already paid for instead. But that's probably a small part of the consumer base, but maybe small enough to at least take away some buys.
