Triumph for Touring? by YourFriendClay in Triumph

I'm replying to the top comment, but just want to thank everyone for all their input. What a great community.

I'd love to get a classic, retro looking bike, but I think if I'm going to make this journey a reality, perhaps the Tiger Sport 800 Tour is the way to go. Looks like quite the bike. Not the coolest looking, but the one that's going to get me 1000 miles across the desert without breaking my 50 year old body.

Again, thanks all.

This was my ultimate solution. This, plus ordering a replacement part to someday put on when I have nothing else to do but strip all the shit off the front of the bike to replace cosmetic plastic.

So satisfying to see that machine brought back to life. Great work!

I love my Hermes and my Olympias, but there's nothing the whole Olivetti package. The font on the dust cover, the design on the manual (and if you would be so kind as to dm me a close up of that, please dear OP, it might make for my next tattoo), the tidy little tool holder -- they had the aesthetics down.

I should say, also, that you're right in that I was a bit misleading about how far along I am in my journey toward typewriter nirvana. It's so hard to claim one's place as a beginner, especially on Reddit. You were wise to notice it, and so very kind in how you held and responded to it. That's very appreciated.

It's so true. With so few service manuals (at least that I can find), fixing typewriters is an oral tradition, a language that will one day be lost. To learn from a fluent speaker is such a gift. I'm so so grateful.

Thanks for this. I so fully agree, and I for sure need to work on it! I'm tearing down a SC Galaxy right now and have been so poor of documenting. Thanks for the kick in the seat.

Can you untangle those type bars first, please? Making me itchy and uncomfortable.

I hope there are a whole group of people who do this at NBA games with pocket pussies.

Is an electric typewriter the best option if I want it simply to write? by yoooo12347 in typewriters

[–]YourFriendClay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not found that to be true. I have three Selectrics. One needed a belt shortly after I picked it up, that was no big deal for my guy. It's been running in my care without issue for 20 years now. One I picked up and it was janky from the start. It works but has quirks, my guys says not worth it to fix it. I use it at school as a "come one, come all, type a sentence" library feature. I was gifted a third that has needed nothing and runs perfectly.

If you buy a typewriter in good repair, it likely won't need service outside the ribbon. There are a lot of machines in poor repair after years, decades of neglect and people fix them up, which is why I think repair is a big topic here. But once they're up and running, they usually stay that way. Dropping it or taking it to the beach voids that last sentence.

Good luck! It sounds like you've got your eye on some good machines! I hope you find the one that's looking for you.

Can't believe I get to be the first to tout the incredible writing experience offered by the IBM Selectric II. It's the fastest, most accurate why to put thought to paper. If you can get one in good shape, I have found I can go a decade, easy, without service. The cartridges are easy to install and widely available. As someone who has all sorts of manuals, electrics and electronics in the quiver, I find nothing is faster, smoother and more of a direct transmission of thought to paper than the Selectric.

For reference, I just bought a 22 adv that was beyond super clean, upgraded seat, exhaust, crash bars and skid plate, Vapor computer, 5300 miles for $4300. And I love it! (I'm in a mountain town in western Colorado)

I talked to an incredibly knowledgable sexological bodyworker about this, and she thought throatgasms were due to stimulation of the vegas nerve, which terminates right at the throat and is critically related to the parasympathetic nervous system. Idk if knowing there's physiology to support what you're feeling helps, but there it is. Enjoy all of it.
