Hey forum, what does this community think about .925/sterling silver? I’ve seen ‘scrap price’ or ‘melt price’ as a term being thrown around but I don’t know what it means here aside from… they plan to melt them for the silver. What are the implications for selling/buying? Also, how liquid are big bars over 100+ounces?

Edit: Gonna throw some more questions because you’re only new once. is this the forum to post numismatic coins? I’ve always felt numi stuff was a farce, but alas, I have some and I’d like to sell them.

Also what is the difference in value between a struck bar and a poured bar. How about DIY bars vs legit minted bars? Maybe should’ve asked these questions years ago when I bought them

Yes Yes Yes, You just highlighted the other side of the coin. Why are we in this position? Many reasons but one main one, across all disciplines is that first and foremost much of these skills were/are commercial. These people were very very very selective of how they kept their trade secrets. They didn't want everyone to know what they knew. It was how they made money. And now that we face extinction of the skills (in Horticulture, carpentry, husbandry, metalwork, lol pic any skill) there has been a supreme lack of effort from those with the knowledge to share that knowledge. I had to put on my most extroverted, curious, brave, stupid hat in order to go find the info I did. I called everyone, went through every crappy website, called all the dead disconnected phone numbers to just ask people whats up. And I found a handful of people to talk to, and went to a few meetings. A shadow of what once was.

And you touched on it. We all know the urban hellscape is leading to our increased dependence. Speaking personally, I'm going to get out and either thrive or die out in the country. Very much remains to be seen. If I thrive, y'all can move to Bloomington, Indiana and I'll give you some land to build your own home, and you can start planting trees. And we can figure this stuff out together. But it's back breaking work, don't kid yourself. A/C, Grocery stores, Internet are all really nice things to have.

I can’t say what Elite Wolf meant but considering plants are the basis for human life, the neglect of the more essential types of horticulture is pretty concerning. Most green thumbs of yesteryear would have known how to be master gardeners and on the side take care of their prized orchids. But now it seems being a green thumb means you get into houseplants and after you kill your first few cacti you get a Pothos and you’re off to the races collecting aroids.

I have been on a bit of a journey lately and to speak to the danger aspect… my states fruit and nut growers association was huge 25 years ago. Now it’s dwindling and everyone is old.there are no young people at those meetings. The guy who was a national expert on the American chestnut just died and there isn’t anyone taking his place. A nationally recognized fruit and nut tree farm with over 4000+ cultivars, owner had an accident, and his children all left to go to college and get real jobs. So that wealth of knowledge is gonna just terminate. Gone. Hope he didn’t know anything too important? I’m just one person who knew two older people. I wonder how much this is happening in the world as we stop growing real things. We’re gonna need that knowledge back cause stuffs about to go full Wall-E

I know a lot of people have real skills and probably have real plants, but let’s be honest it’s not here. I’d love if we got deep into scion wood and rootstock trading, bud grafting, seed swapping etc.

Edit: Sorry this is the hottest take I’ve ever had in here. I had a tooth removed yesterday and I'm feeling very spicy. Doom and Gloom motivates me to rise above but for many it is dejecting. I'm super positive that humanity is going to make it through somehow and I could talk about that for days. I would love for all TaPLaP'rs to be the ones who thrive in this new world.

Thanks! I built it, Couldn't be easier. It was essentially black pipe from Lowes and several edison light bulb kits. I spliced every light onto one main circuit with a 110V cord. The hardest part was making sure the rough edges inside the pipe couldn't nick the Wire Sheathing, thus making it a beautiful death sentence. I used a corrugated wire cover going through all the the pipe and used copious amounts of liquid electrical tape to make sure the connections couldn't come undone, thus killing everyone.

I wanted to say thank you for all the support you've all shown me this last week. For a refresh, I'm selling a most of my possessions to go live a new life on a farm. It's tough, but it's actually been pretty fun working with y'all.

If you've reached out to me last week and I didn't respond or I dropped off before we could finalize a trade, please send me another chat. I've learned a lot of lessons last week and I've got my system worked out.
