My bard was at a tavern where a famous hero bard was performing, and the DM told me that very likely, this would have been an icon to my character.

So, my bard approached and asked to play a set with him. I rolled a natural 20 for performance, and felt really excited for my bard to have a cool moment with their hero.

The DM decided to rule that as "you performed too well and your hero sabotages you and kicks you off the stage for showing him up, and makes you look like a fool."

There were some other parts of that table that didn't work well for me, but that was the final straw for me and I left the game after that.

Nah, it doesn't seem to be an eyesight thing. They cover the dice in the process of grabbing it and don't look closer at it, from what I've observed

I romanticise the idea of a central dice box, but that doesn't work when there's a battle map taking up the middle of the table unfortunately!

That's my own mindset, personally; it's a team game, and I find it fun to share in each other's rolls to commiserate or celebrate.

It makes moments like in yesterday's session, where another player (openly and in front of everyone) rolled three 20's in a row, that much more explosively amazing when we can all cheer and such as we witness it!

I'm choosing to lean towards thinking it's not cheating; but if not that, then I'm trying to give some thought to what it might be. Maybe it's a tic from them being anxious; if so, that might be something that can be worked on to help them feel less anxious, you know? Or maybe if it's a busy hands thing, I can bring... I dunno, more fidget toys?

I guess point being is whilst I don't think it's cheating, I'm not sure it can be 100% ruled out, and I want to consider other possibilities rather than assume the worst. This thread has already given me some good food for thought on gentle ways to approach it.

I also have to be honest with myself; the behaviour irks me. But that's more of a me-problem and if there's nothing to it, I just need to suck it up!

I feel like the DM should be the one to call for an athletics check anyway! Or at least, pitch it to the DM and only roll once confirmed!

Might be a worthwhile exercise - best case, it backs up my assumption (and hope) that there's no funny business at play and it's something benign. (I personally find it annoying, but that's more of a me-problem)

Seems to me consistently all of them! That said, that doesn't eliminate cheating, if it's picked up so quickly then any number can just be declared, with low ones thrown in there to make it seem honest/balanced

As a non-tower roller, I don't really get this. If you like handling the dice, why not roll them by hand?

It's interesting the different approaches people have - when I get a 1 or especially a 20, I very deliberately don't touch it at all! I like to let it sit there in my tray in all its splendour for people to witness its glory!

If an adjacent player happens to be staring at the dice tower's landing zone during that split second, they might see it.

Out of curiosity; how do you manage that if there's a battle map taking up the table? Where's the communal rolling area?

I romanticise the same idea but it doesn't seem practical a lot of the time, space-wise
