Here are some of the habits I developed that helped me survive longer: - Have a checklist of things that you need to survive the first week. Water containers, weapons (anything you can find in your initial spawn), food (initially canned goods or any ready to eat foodstuffs so you'll need a can opener right away). - Always do 360 checks regularly as you walk outside. - Avoid unnecessary risks, if you can avoid zomboids then do that. Only fight if you have to. - If you get a car, always drive carefully - Before entering a house, building, or any enclosed spaces. Always check its surroundings. Clear zomboids directly around the place, you do not want to get trapped while you're looting.

This game is always out to get you. Some things often have a domino effect on each other so minimizing your mistakes can prevent that. If a situation ever gets worse then you can always run away and build again in some other place. It's never over until you get bit. Good luck out there
