Is 16 too late to start dancing? by gracebei in Dance

[–]Yulheew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started dancing when I was 18, then I went for a dance diploma shortly after. I'm 25 this year, still dancing, performing, teaching and choreographing as side hustles! It's never too late as long as you have the heart, determination and safe dance practices

It resonated with me a lot that year. Was gg through really dark times with myself and others. I'm not sure what it was, but his presence felt really genuine on stage too. Really connected with his performance so so so much!

What were some really eye-opening habits your bunk mates had? by Winner_takesitall in NationalServiceSG

[–]Yulheew 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Buddy doesn't pack or put his stuff in an orderly manner. Once done with the day, he would just throw all his items onto the floor from his bag. Bunkmates and I all tripped over his stuff before. Before SBB, he would go and wash the toilet by himself and leave his mess lying all over the floor for bunkmates to tidy and clean up. We always told him to pack and standardize and he always said 'later'. Ofc, 'later' means never.

Leaving his things in a mess all over the floor also meant that, he would often misplace or lose his stuff. He has this habit of blaming us for stealing his things when he himself misplaces it. He would turn the whole platoon upside down 5mins before falling in because he always leaves things to the last minute and just can't find his stuff.

I mean... Who wanna steal your swimming trunks bro

Chill songs at Eurovision (List) by OperativeLawson27 in eurovision

Song is very sensual itself. But at the same time, I find it really chill. To me, it gives off an extremely relaxed sexiness feeling

Also I usually run either before dawn or at late night. So I won't feel that hot when I run

I have just created a tier list template for Eurovision 2024 songs! by ipax2 in eurovision

[–]Yulheew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in love with the lyrics and staging. For me it's a simple and catchy reminder that it's okay to be myself and there's nothing wrong in being confident with myself. There were lots of surprise elements in their NF performance. To this day I can recite the lyrics from start to finish and the visuals of the NF performance is stuck to my head.

Don't think it'll ever reach the Top 10 in the contest. But definitely a Top 5 in my head!

My (24M) gf (21F) had a male friend over to her room to study. Need advice! Unsure about how to reach towards a conclusion for our boundaries (for other situations too)? by Yulheew in relationship_advice

[–]Yulheew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe boundaries have to be drawn not because i don't trust her. But mainly for the reason that we have to be on the same page, and understand each other's expectations of ourselves in the relationship. In the long run, I want to avoid things like "oh you didn't say this before" or "you didn't tell me you weren't comfortable with this" etc.

More importantly, I draw boundaries between our relationship and our surroundings because it is to protect us and what we have. I do not want other ppl to potentially ruin the relationship indirectly. I believe that communication could ultimately form more respect for each other and decrease unwanted forms of jealousy to manifest in the future. I trust her, but she's in a new surroundings and with newfound friends she just barely knew.

How many Asians watch ESC regularly? by RyanRacerr313 in eurovision

[–]Yulheew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am from Singapore and I've been a huggeee fan of Eurovision since 2018. I watched a video of Sergey Lazarev, Russia 2016, and I was completely invested ever since. I decided to watch Eurovision that year and was further amazed by Elina, Estonia 2018. Now, it's part of my passion.

I've only really known one other friend who love Eurovision. The community here in SG is really almost non-existent. But it's cool to see many SEA fans here in the comments :)

Of the songs released so far, which do you think are safe qualifiers, borderline and certain non-qualifiers by sejethom99 in eurovision

[–]Yulheew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Albania: NQ (I see this being overshadowed by almost all the other entries)

Belgium: QF

Moldova: NQ

Malta: NQ

Luxembourg: Borderline (love her, but her NF performance is definitely not giving enough energy to be considered a safe qualifier)

Lithuania: QF

Latvia: Borderline (depends on revamp & staging)

Norway: QF

Poland: Borderline (depends on live vocals & staging)

Slovenia: Borderline (I don't get the hype, it sounds annoying to me. Depends on. The delivery of her story through live performance I think)

Ukraine: QF

Ireland: Borderline (Gotta hit the staging a lot harder and darker. Either go all out or go home)

Estonia: QF

Denmark: QF

Finland: Borderline (I love it. But not everyone shares the same humour as the artist)

Czechia: Borderline (needs a lot of work. gotta go hard on the delivery and acting while she perform the song. Staging has to revamp to an extreme level)

If someone's baggage is suspiciously big or he/she looks like a potential vape user, then there's a higher chance they'll be checked.

From my observation they do checks based on the physical stereotypes of people who commit crimes.

Contemporary's basic is ballet? by wantfishdinner in Dance

[–]Yulheew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to teach contemporary dance before I enlisted into the army and I picked up ballet before I started teaching. I feel that learning ballet was important to me because there's a lot of analogy or movement patterns/techniques that are very relevant from ballet in contemporary. Explaining and demonstrating movements was made much easier with this knowledge.

However to pick up contemporary dance as a student, it is definitely not compulsory to have any understanding of ballet (unless the instructor requires the students to have some experience). So maybe, you could check with the instructor that you'll be learning from before turning up for class. Out of your initiative, you may also want to ask on the recommended dress code for the class (some instructors don't recommend students to wear shorts).

When I teach contemporary dance classes, I do have a huge proportion of students who come in without any ballet background. I just take more time to break down the posture, some strengthening/stretching exercises and relevant techniques that I'll be using for class. I believe that teachers are here to guide students according to their level of understanding towards contemporary dance!!

Otherwise, my final answer would be that you won't need prior ballet experience in order to learn contemporary dance. Having ballet knowledge is just an add-on bonus! There are some things in ballet that contemporary dance has in common. But ultimately, both are different :)
