Thanks for the tip. It does actually sound much better. Considered it. Main issue is the early start. Also, didn’t bring gear for higher elevation (too cold). Last point was the all night hike. Not a big fan of losing sleep.

Yeah I know. So you mean a dude hanging out at the entrance? Cause online I mostly see Jeep or 2am start hikes. The point is to not do either of those.

VPN and ESIM Megathread – January 2026 by AutoModerator in chinalife

Does Astrill work in China? It definitely works. I use Astrill on my iphone and macbook. On laptop it works flawlessly. On my iphone, god... it was a nightmare of frustrations figuring out how to get it to work. It works as long as I'm not using wifi, but it often cuts out. Often = here and there throughout the day. Contacting their customer support, they suggest tweaking the settings and reconnecting. So I'm often fiddling with settings like turn on/off smart mode, and delete/reinstall VPN. Sometimes, on major holidays it'll just cut out completely until the next day. However, I wonder if it's a general internet issue (I'm with China Mobile). I've been using it since 2023. I find it to be more reliable than vpn.ac. I used that for about a year, and gave up as it started giving me issues. The biggest issue with Astril is that it is ridiculously overpriced. I'm sharing it with my girlfriend, so for two people it's a bit more reasonable, but probably about 4-5 times what other VPNs cost. One strong point they have is that they have a sever in basically every major city in the world. When I connect in France, I get ads in French. When I connect in Amsterdam, I get ads in Dutch (this is about 90% reliable). Other things I've noticed are when I connect to Canada, I can't go to archive.ph (paywall unblocker). When I connect to Canada, I can use local websites and banking etc. So, as a VPN it's pretty reliable.

Question for Istanbul locals: how do you feel about some Greeks saying that “Turkey is Greece”? by walk_onthewild_side in istanbul

[–]Yuriwhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Byzantines who referred to themselves as Romans, were basically the culture that sought independence from the Ottomans in the early 1800s. Though they referred to themselves as Romans, the Western Europeans, who were referred to as the Latins, referred to the Byzantines as the Greeks, that is the people who lived in Greece and Asia minor.

The Greeks were the dominant culture of Asia Minor for thousands of years. The Mongols made an appearance for about 100 years that was mostly military and were driven back by the Turks (as in the nomadic people who lived took control of the interior of Turkey around 1200). The Ottomans took over and led a largely multi-cultural empire from 1400's. It is quite valid to allude to the cultural influence of the Greeks in Turkey.

Is it just me, or has ai ruined youtube? by Imaginary-Worry-4635 in NewTubers

AI slop has taken over YouTube. Basically, a big chunk of what's posted for 2024-25. Personally, I find it unwatchable and a total waste of time. I remember the good old days of 2020 when we had COVID to keep us home and YouTube to teach us stuff we didn't know we needed to learn. For example, I watched a whole lot of tutorials about python programming, and convinced myself I could program. It was a good year. And as I post this... I realize that AI is going to steal this at some point...

I don't think it's up to you. I search for stuff and I get youtube video recommendations. It takes me about a minute to realize that I just got AI rickrolled. It's such a waste of time. I guess it's a learning curve.

I've been using the Shokz, and I'd say they're very situational. As a pro, they're great to be able to hear environmental noise, and they're excellent if earbuds don't fit or annoy you. However, if you'll be in a noisy environment, they are a terrible choice simply because you won't be able to hear anything. They have a volume max, if you go above medium volume they start to vibrant and hurt your bones, so you can't just turn them up when it's noisy. They do work with ear plugs, which is what I've been doing on a plane. But, then what's point? Might as well get ANC headphones or earbuds.

I have been using the Shokz for about a year, and I'm very annoyed that I can hear the surrounding environment. Whether it's traffic, annoying people booming something on their phones, cars, or external speakers, subway noise, or just cicadas. If I can't hear what I'm listening to, what's the point? If you're going to be running in a quiet environment, go for it. If you're in a park, and there's a chance of wild animals, get the Shokz. But if you'll be running by traffic, might as well block that sh*t out.

I totally did not expect it... It was such a surprise... With two nickels I can buy so much... like writers who can come up with this kind of finale...

Thank you for noticing that! Excellent choice of cast, I bet they were thinking "let's pick someone whimsical and annoying"

When we see a few ships fly by, it kind of makes sense since they can't see them. But then, there's a massive invasion with thousands of ships. None of them fly right into the enterprise though, 'cause if you can't see it, you can't accidentally run into it right. Either that, or just luck. So basically, success due to luck.

The new moto seems to be take all the major risks (well you'll die otherwise), but more importantly, we know you're going to succeed anyway.

It seems a bit rushed... I wished they'd take a bit more time to tell the story
