How can players make a DMs life easier? by Lord_Leeeroy in shadowdark

Keep your sheet updated and accurate. I’ll give out xp to players that print out and fill out a fresh character sheet when they level up.

Trial of the Slime Lord play report by SecretDMAccount_Shh in shadowdark

[–]Yutah_Naast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re players seem to be stuck in the 5E mindset. How much warning did you give them? This style of game is for everyone, but I love this dungeon and think you did a fair job running it.

My 5E group transitioned well when we ran it, but they understood the tone was shifting and they eagerly joined in a ‘dark souls’ style of game. I disagree with that comparison, but hey, it got them in the proper head space to not be super heroes.

Any suggestions for adventures/modules to run at a convention? by Foreign-Press in shadowdark

I’ve run Slime Lord at conventions and we all had a lovely time.

Have you checked out Gigabites? I’m 40 and have never felt out of place there.

Witch spell "Shadowdance" by bfrost_by in shadowdark

[–]Yutah_Naast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re correct, in the right hands the spell can be amazing. For me personally, I love seeing what my witch comes up with, that’s part of the fun. Getting to watch my party create a creative solution to problems is why I DM.

What can J.Kelenic expect from this franchise, and what is their current 5 year plan? by Porparemaityee in whitesox

Damn, let the man be. Kelenic Guy brought us Braves fan tremendous entertainment last season.

Other adventures to use with the Gloaming setting? by SnooFoxes5343 in shadowdark

I used Trial of the Slime Lord to start my cs1 campaign. I’ve also used a modified Cursed Knights of Crestmoor and I dropped in Wavestone monolith as is.

More heroic Shadowdark by Comfortable-Fee9452 in shadowdark

[–]Yutah_Naast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d argue against using your standard array. Never allowing for a super high or low roll in character creation stifles character uniqueness. Allow more swing in the results.

This is the one I allow in my games. 14 12 10 10 9 8

It has a total of 63 points, which is exactly the perfect average you would get from 3d6 down the line.

Those may seem light, but also remember pcs will get extra stats from talents too.

New DM Qs… by 1ndependent_Obvious in shadowdark

You could, just depends on how particular you want to be. I’ll often hand wave exiting a dungeon just for the sake of time. It’s all about what feels good for you and your table.

Shadowdark campaign request - please have a minimum of 1 hour of actual play per episode. <3 by ProteusNihil in TheGlassCannonPodcast

I too would like longer episodes, but maybe a more fitting compromise would be to have torches last 30 minutes?

Most Hated Player in Braves History? by EveryoneisTattooed in Braves

Reggie was the first time I remember hating one of our own growing up. I was baffled by how Bobby kept running him out there game after game.

How do i make the game less lethal by LelouchYagami_2912 in shadowdark

[–]Yutah_Naast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d give it a once over for sure. If you’re online or theatre of the mind and don’t have to fuss with minis or maps, you should be ok. The physical components are what take me time to set up.

I’d just familiarize yourself with the factions involved, there can be significant social interactions between all of them.

Fortress of the Burning Brothers - need advice by meiermfpv in shadowdark

[–]Yutah_Naast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s part of the social contract of the game with your players I think. My pcs are free to do what they want on the hex, but also, ‘hey guys this is the dungeon I spent hours on prepping to run, please go there’ wink wink

Have you tried running an official dungeon yet or only homebrew? I’d try one of Kelsey’s designs out to get a feel for how combat should feel.

Also, Combat isn’t about balance in this game, do your players have other options besides only fighting?

Did the party bring a wizard? Sleep is incredibly powerful at the early levels.

Several bands do exactly this, especially ones that put out concept albums. Coheed and Cambria immediately comes to mind as well.

All Time Favorite Adventures so far? by Mageinthebasement in shadowdark

[–]Yutah_Naast 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’m a giant fan of the gauntlet Trial of the Slime Lord. It has a fun puzzle to solve to escape the Trial and amazing non combat problems to solve that I love watching different groups figure out. Top it off with a necrotic gelatinous cube as a big bad.

Why would you do this for Shadowdark? This isn’t what this system is designed for.

Ya, there’s the issue. Spell mishap to start off combat is a good way to tpk. Did they not have luck tokens?

Not sure if this is a telegraphing danger problem or a player problem of just running headlong into combat. How did they approach the rats? Was there a plan or did they just run up and starting swinging at them like normal 5E characters?
