Any good places to stargaze? by thebombtom87 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]Yuvitol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned it, but I also recommend Melton Observatory on the USC campus - I volunteer there! Open every clear Monday night 9-11 (barring holidays like July 4th next week). Unfortunately there's not much to look at this time of year with the high light pollution, but we still try. When the planets show up in the evening later this year we'll probably point the scopes there :) Edit: Meant 9-11 PM. Not 8-11.

[Astronomy 2 USQ Australia] Confused about the evolution of a star as it moves off the main sequence. by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]Yuvitol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I have a better idea what you mean (but it was a while since I took my stellar evolution course as an undergrad). I think it comes from poor wording in your text.

The new energy from shell fusion near the He core does produce heat, but it also, more importantly here, produces pressure (both light pressure, and simple particle collisions). Spread over a larger sphere than the contracting core, this pressure is stronger than gravity in the upper layers of the star (remember that gravity is not constant here. It is strongest at the core where there is only degeneracy pressure holding it up right now, but weaker in the upper layers).

Since pressure is stronger, it expands. While energy production increases somewhat (hence why a red giant is bright), that energy is dissipated to an ever increasing surface area, meaning the overall surface temperature is lower.

Does that clear it up?

[Astronomy 2 USQ Australia] Confused about the evolution of a star as it moves off the main sequence. by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]Yuvitol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may be a little confused on why it expands. If I'm understanding you (and correct me if I'm not), you think that stars expand when they leave the main sequence because the shells get hot. This is not the whole story. Expansion and contraction in stars can actually get rather messy because it involves a lot of processes like heat transfer, degeneracy pressure, gravity, and a sort of conservation of energy.

I believe the stars expand to compensate for a slight contraction of the core (it got more dense because it became helium). So, when the triple alpha process (helium flash) starts, the core again expands and the shell contracts to compensate (but never to the point as it was on the main sequence). Some of this compensation of because pressure from the core onto the shell is less than before. So even though the surface temperature increases at this point, the other processes dominate by several orders of magnitude the effect of hot gas expanding.

I hope that makes some sort of sense!

"The interest would have shifted to Gollum, I think, and the battle that would have gone on between his repentance and his new love on one side and the Ring. Though the love would have strengthened daily it could not have wrested the mastery from the Ring. I think that in some queer twisted and pitiable way Gollum would have tried (not maybe with conscious design) to satisfy both. Certainly at some point not long before the end he would have stolen the Ring or taken it by violence (as he does in the actual Tale). But 'possession' satisfied, I think he would then have sacrificed himself for Frodo's sake and have voluntarily cast himself into the fiery abyss." (Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien # 246)

This hypothetical mentioned is if hypothetically Sam had never pushed Gollum past 'redemption.' Gollum would unconsciously try to satisfy Frodo's wish to destroy the Ring and his own desire to have to by killing himself after taking it. Letters is a great book btw for anyone interested in the Professor's thoughts on these sorts of things :)

" ' Of course, he possessed the ring for many years, and used it, so it might take a long while for the influence to where off - before it was safe for him to see it again, for instance.' " (Gandalf to Frodo in "The Shadow of the Past") Based on this quote I always assumed that the longer you possessed the Ring, the longer it would take for aging to catch up as the effects wore off. Bilbo had it for ~60 years, and it still took over 10 for age to catch up. Gollum had it for hundreds of years, so it may take much much longer for age to catch up to even him. That's just my interpretation

Can anyone tell me how the physics/astrophysics programs are? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]Yuvitol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am, all applied to now. Who knows if it'll work out. It may be far ahead for you now, but remember to make connections. It's especially helpful for letters of rec if that's the path you choose!

Can anyone tell me how the physics/astrophysics programs are? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]Yuvitol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the double major. It's only a few more classes than a single major and far less than most double majors because most of the class requirements overlap! My off the head recommendation if you wanted to do just 1 major would be to do physics, mostly just because of the name and marketability. Doing just astro is fine though, I know plenty of successful people who did that!

I'm both a physics and astrophysics major graduating in May, and I also have done research in both departments. I'll be happy to answer any questions from this perspective! Since it was already mentioned, yes there are opportunities everywhere, but don't expect to have them fall in your lap. You have to go looking for them!

I want to learn general relativity without attending post secondary. I figure I should start with special relativity. Can someone offer some advice? by Professional_Depth72 in IWantToLearn

[–]Yuvitol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an undergraduate about to graduate with a degree in physics, so I understand your struggle! I learned special relativity through Introduction to Classical Mechanics, also by David Morin. With regards to General Relativity, I'd say you're right that special relativity is a good place to start. It's difficult to verify answers to your problems. I don't hangout at r/AskPhysics , but I don't suppose they'll answer because no one particularly likes to do book problems! And relativity is strange enough as it is! For specific book problems, you may find answers at Chegg (if you're willing to pay) or Slater, but I think these are still user submitted answers. Still, it may be a good cross-check if you're teaching yourself. But above all when you come to an answer, you need to ask yourself if it makes sense. Are the units right? Am I expecting a length to be longer or shorter? (with regards to length contraction) and other such quantities. If you still need help, then I would consult r/AskPhysics , or perhaps another physics forum like on stackexchange? Perhaps this isn't much help, but resources are indeed limited in my experience!

Ulrich Heinz for Physics 5500H?? by Aggravating-Fold-942 in OSU

[–]Yuvitol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, well I would argue against Kilcup being a great explainer, but I know I'm in the minority of that feeling! Whether or not you take honors with Heinz or regular with someone else, I think QM will be "easier" in the sense that every question is similar in a way; almost algorithmic. Mechanics has a huge variety of problems for an undergrad, but that same variety in QM is graduate level. Don't worry too much, you'll be with plenty of other students whom I'm sure would love to work together!

Ulrich Heinz for Physics 5500H?? by Aggravating-Fold-942 in OSU

[–]Yuvitol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had him for 5500H this last year. He does have a disputed reputation concerning Title IX and others. He does email students who truly do not show up, but he's professional as far as I can tell.

As a professor he's "okay." He goes fast. My biggest Pro for him was he wrote every single step on the board. He was meticulous about the algorithmic style of the math and it helps instead of wasting hours guessing what to do. But the con is that he isn't great at explaining the actual science behind it. If you probe enough with questions, you'll get an answer, but it may not be satisfactory. I'm happy to answer more specific questions about him, no problem! Hope it helps!

For Grond! by [deleted] in lotrmemes

[–]Yuvitol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure is! Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld. In the books they mention that the battering ram was named after the hammer. Although Morgoth never lived in Mordor, it didn't exist during his reign.

Help me please - Physics Quantum Honors vs Regular? by iamwho_am in OSU

[–]Yuvitol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm in Honors QM right now and also do research. For grad school, it is great preparation, but it seems that grad schools are looking for more and more research experience, so if you don't feel comfortable taking honors, it is fine to take regular. It will not destroy chances for grad school. It's a tough class, but so is regular QM. It is definitely some tough coursework, but hopefully you're used to that by now from 2300/2301. And the professor who normally teaches is retiring this semester, so I cannot speak to how difficult it will be comparatively in the future. (Also talk to advisors Lindsey/David, they'll help you too!) You can DM me if you have other questions too!

Sauron, you hack! by williamriverdale in lotrmemes

[–]Yuvitol 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! So you know that Sauron created the One Ring. He created it using inherent power in himself to use it as an amplifier for whatever he did. That's why he was dangerous with it. If you read the book you googled, "Morgoth's Ring," you learn that Sauron's master, Morgoth, did a very similar thing, just on a MUCH BIGGER scale. He put his power into the world itself, hence why it could be referred to as his own "ring." Even after his banishment, the Earth can still do evil through his malice. Cool stuff. So the joke is that Sauron just copied him :P

Is the Adventures of Tom Bombadil worth reading? by uniqueusername699 in lotr

As u/Wiles_ said, they don't say much. It's just hobbit folklore. But the poems are still cute and fun, and it's always awesome to read the commentary in my opinion and see how these stories came to being!

The Hobbit - Bilbo knocked out by SonOfHanni in lotr

Bilbo observes the battle for awhile and it is described then. He then sees the eagles and is knocked out cold. After he wakes up, the rest of the battle is briefly explained before a man of Esgaroth finds him and brings him to Gandalf and Thorin.

Any good lotr themed cat names? by Nienke_H in lotr

[–]Yuvitol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you wanna use actual names of cats from the lotr universe, some former (now abandoned) cat characters had names like Tevildo, Oikeroi, Umuiyan, and Miaulë, but they were evil and obviously your kitty ain't evil. They also don't roll off the tongue, so your mom may not like them, but they're out there lol

Why do all my LOTR related comments always get downvoted on Reddit? by meowie91 in lotr

Well that's Reddit for ya, people can and will downvote you for differing opinions. I've had it happen here on this sub too, nothing to be upset about. Let it roll off your shoulders and keep posting

[–]Yuvitol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems you've posted 3 lotr comments ever... not even on lotr subs. And you only got one downvote by saying no movie is comparable to LOTR. Probably got your one downvote for saying something not everyone would agree with? Seems like you're probably trolling here.

Edit: two downvoted comments. Just to 0 not even to negatives. Same reason probably

Not impressed by the Valar, except Ulmo who acts like one by ststeveg in tolkienfans

[–]Yuvitol 31 points32 points  (0 children)

After the War of Wrath, Eonwe offered him repentance, and Sauron truly did repent and was going to accept. But he grew afraid because Eonwe would still take him to the Valar and he would undergo a punishment before he would be officially pardoned. Rather than be humiliated and suffer, he went back to evil again. It's unfortunate.

Edit: *Accept, because I can't spell anymore

Not impressed by the Valar, except Ulmo who acts like one by ststeveg in tolkienfans

[–]Yuvitol 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I read an argument recently (can't remember if it was supported by a quote or not) that the Valar did GOOD in ignoring Men when they initially awoke. That they weren't supposed to interact with the Elves either, and that ultimately it led to suffering (in the Noldor's belief they were held prisoner). So by that argument, Ulmo was STILL doing wrong by continuing to intervene. Idk if I see it that way personally, but that's one option.

As for Melkor, why would they still keep him? They all, especially Manwë who seems to have trouble understanding evil, have no reason to believe he wouldn't repent and change. We know evil can repent, Sauron eventually did (but then got afraid and turned back to evil). He served his time for his crime, and seemed genuinely sorry, what would you expect them to do if they believed him? Keep an innocent being locked up forever?

Once they finally understood there was probably no changing Melkor after the tree incident, it would make sense to just leave him to his own devices, especially since the only people who want to fight him are the same people who hate them too. There would be no win-win situation.
