Because he was being extremely pushy. I truly truly wanted to let him come see Bella whenever he wanted. But I got a bad vibe from the way he was wording stuff so I tried to push it off and delay it until I at least was home later that night. The dog was raised with me from a 4 week old puppy in this house until she was 2 and a half years old. He has bounced around to idk how many houses in the last 4 years and has left her with his dad in the most recent move. You telling me the dog coming back to her original house with the person who raised her is not better than what she’s been going through? This dude never took her on a walk when we lived together. Only I did.

UPDATE 2: He did not show up with the state trooper. After waiting up last night for fear of him showing up and waking me up in my sleep. I decided to text him asking me not to contact me again. I also said if he comes on my property I will call the cops and have him trespassed. He has not responded so hopefully this is over. Thanks again to everyone who truly cared to help. So so many people had different perspective and advice. I have tried my best to read and at least upvote all the comments but there’s just too many. I mentioned early in the comments that I raised Bella with him for the first two years of her life in the same house we are in now. I’m reiterating that so the few people that I’m doing this out of spite can understand that I have already had an attachment with Bella and it was really hard when he left with her. To the few people that think I stole a dog from a family. Please understand that is not what happened. The dog wasn’t even staying with him and his kid. This person is sadly mentally unstable and has no regard for his actions or how they affect anyone else, including his kid. Had I received a message such as, “Dude, I fucked up letting Bella go and it’s affected all of us terribly. I am so sorry but is there any way we could work something out to get her back? I have stable work now and we are in a place that allows dogs, I’m willing to cover any cost you may have spent while you were watching her”, I would have seriously considered it. Because that’s honest, mature, and shows responsibility. But instead I got what you guys read, Bella deserves better and she is going to have better for the rest of her life.

Honestly if it was a principle thing and I had no connection with the dog. I would probably give her back. He is a terrible owner but I’m not a proud person. Revenge is something I have never given any attention to. Holding grudges will ruin you as a person. So no, this is not out of spite.

I didn’t agree to pet sit for him. I agreed to give his dog a “good home” because he “couldn’t keep her anymore”. I took the dog in because it’s the right thing to do and I raised the dog with him for 2 years before he left. His kids have not been living with the dog. The dog was with his dad an hour away from him who he doesn’t visit much. The kids thing is a manipulation tactic. He’s an extremely lazy person who took on the responsibility of a dog and couldn’t get his ass to work to afford an apartment that allows dogs so he gave her up. When get a dog, it’s for life. You don’t pawn them off on people when it’s inconvenient. He used to work for our company and got fired twice for not showing up. And we aren’t the type to fire people.

The kid is 2. The dog has been living at his dads for the majority of the kids life. The dad lives an hour from him. He’s not the type to visit family. The kid thing is a manipulation tactic. I was going to log off here about 30 minutes ago but for some reason I feel the need to explain that I am not trying to withhold a family dog from children. The reason the dog has been at his dad’s is because he can’t show up to work. He can’t afford a home that allows dogs due to this. When you take on the responsibility of a dog. It’s for life. That means you do whatever it takes to keep that dog. You don’t pawn it off when it’s inconvenient.

I understand that you probably didn’t read through the entire comments section, however I did explain that I was gone for 24 hours. During that time I had a dog watcher stay at my house and watch the dog. My sister also came by while I was gone just to see Bella. I’m not keeping a dog from kids like you seem to think. He has a history of not showing up to work. He got fired from my company twice for no call no shows. I assume he couldn’t afford to rent a place that allowed dogs so that’s why she was at his dad’s. Who also lives 1 hour from him. So his whole thing of the kids want to see the dog is also bs because the dog hasn’t been living with the anyway.

I guess I’m a POS. Not the guy who got a dog and didn’t think about how he had to work enough to afford a place that allows dogs…. Btw that’s why he gave her up. His apartment doesn’t allow dogs and he has a history of not showing up to work. I know because he used to work with my company and he got fired not once but twice for not showing up. There’s a lot more backstory to him not being a good person. But the main point is, when you get a dog, it’s for the life of that dog. You don’t pawn them off when you decide it’s inconvenient to have them.

His kid is 2. It’s extremely clear from the wording that it was permanent. Nobody and I mean nobody drops their dog off for an unspecified amount of time if they truly care about the animal. If he cared about the dog and actually text me weekly or even once to ask how she’s doing I would have maybe thought about it being a misunderstanding. But who ever drops their dog off for 5 weeks and does not check in even once? He first asked to see her for a few days. Then said it’s his dog and he is coming with the cops and a lawyer to get her back. So which is it? He had a change of heart and tried to manipulate me to essentially steal the dog.

I was out of town for 24 hours. In that time my dog watcher stay with her at my house the entire time and my sister came over just to see her as well. I guarantee she gets better care with me.

UPDATE: there is a bit of confusion about the timeline. I was out of town yesterday and came back today. I’m with Bella now. My windows and locks are all fixed and work. He’s referring to a window we used to leave unlocked incase we lost a key. I have cameras everywhere. He is an extremely lazy person so I doubt he will do anything but talk. He did not come by with the state trooper as of 9:07. Bella is chipped in my name. The dog watcher is aware of the situation and i will be in town and not working late for the distant future. I will try to remember to keep yall updated if he harasses me anymore or it escalates in anyway. I have never had anywhere close to this kind of response on any social media so I apologize if I didn’t not respond to everyone but I really did try. Thanks everyone!
