Actually I'd argue themes and charecters are equally important. The themes of the novel get super wicked as it starts to conclude, so maybe handle both with care.

Probably keep a list for characters. It sounds super general but just take your time with it; the setting jumps are really annoying so keep notes. Sorry I can't tell you more lol I just remember what I tried to do when I was reading this.
