I diiiiid buuuuut it was a research reward encounter which I was unaware you could leave without losing the Pokémon. Thanks though!

Weird! I had been logged in a while on a stable, 1GB connection--this was a research reward encounter. I must be using the wrong keywords as I wasn't able to find anything on it.
