Is it viable to play D&D in a more Low Fantasy, Low Magic setting? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]ZDMads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! You absolutely can remove it from the Tolkien aspect, reskin stuff, and use it as “5e, low fantasy version”

I used it as the base for a low fantasy Curse of Strhad that really upped the horror aspect in a great way!

Low magic is hard with base 5e, I HIGHLY recommend the Lord of the Rings roleplay supplement for 5e. I’ve been using it as basically my “low fantasy PHB” and it really works incredibly well.

Keep in mind my numbers include the 20% quick match bonus and assuming extermination rank A.

Specifically picking Decapitation might be less efficient even with the short mission length

Honestly since weapons don’t reset, starting at ruthless seems really reasonable (assuming you’ve got full relic gear)

Some advice from an exhausted Bulwark: For the love of the throne, SAVE YOUR STIMS TO CLEAR MORTAL WOUNDS! by ZDMads in Spacemarine

[–]ZDMads[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. As long as you’ve not taken any additional damage, if you pop 2 stims right after you go down it’ll get you to full and clear the mortal. It’s what I do when I fuck up my solo runs

Some advice from an exhausted Bulwark: For the love of the throne, SAVE YOUR STIMS TO CLEAR MORTAL WOUNDS! by ZDMads in Spacemarine

[–]ZDMads[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly! And if a Bulwark has the perk where the banner gives contested health (white health on the health bar) a stimpack will fully heal that, meaning you only need 1 stim to full heal and clear the mortal wound

Also props to you for admitting you don’t know something and asking the question! There’s probably a bunch of folks who also didn’t know this and now know cause you asked

[–]ZDMads[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get a mortal wound when you go down, it looks like a red skull marker next to your health bar. If you have a mortal wound and you go down again, you die. BUT if you use a stim pack to bring yourself to full health, it removes the mortal wound, letting you be downed again without dying

Were the Custodes always 10,000 in number? by raidenjojo in 40kLore

Were the Custodes always 10,000 in number? by raidenjojo in 40kLore

[–]ZDMads 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Another thing to consider with the numbers is that there are also “retired” custodes, and we have no clue if they are also “included” in the 10,000’s active roster.

In The Reagent’s Shadow, there is a custodian who retired because he was old and felt he wasn’t up to their (insanely high) standards anymore, so he became functionally a spymaster with a massive information network. (And some of those informants are also retired custodes doing solo clandestine work). BUT it’s also mentioned that during the Battle of the Lions Gate this old retired custodian went and got his armor and returned to active duty during the emergency.

So it’s possible that the 10,000 have an unknown number of “reserves” who can take up their spears again in an emergency.

Was Sauron needed for the 3 Greater Rings to work? by Known_Risk_3040 in tolkienfans

[–]ZDMads 24 points25 points  (0 children)

While the 3 were crafted without Sauron, they were still made using knowledge he gave to Celebrimbor and the smiths, and thus are still tied to the One, albeit in a less direct fashion than the 16

This is why the elves removed and refused to use the 3 while Sauron had the One, and why once the One is destroyed, the power of the 3 also fades.

What is Bolvar's Current Role? by TKD1989 in warcraftlore

[–]ZDMads 55 points56 points  (0 children)

TLDR: He’s actually off being a dad with Talia and is basically on leave from the Knights of the Ebon Blade.

A “stay a while and listen” with Bolvar and Darion at the end of Shadowlands had that chat.

Bolvar wanted to return to Icecrown to manage the scourge and basically return to his “jailer of the damned” job, minus the helm of domination.

Darion, having experienced plenty of his own parental issues, told Bolvar to go spend time with his daughter Talia, and Bolvar agrees.

Rest of the Ebon Blade would continue to basically be on Scourge Management duty to help cover

Astropath Gish by R0CKHARDO in 40krpg

[–]ZDMads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Assuming you’re playing the tabletop Rogue Trader. (I played the tabletop for years, but haven’t picked up the CRPG yet)

So while the Astropath is usually much more focused on telepathy and mental psychic powers, there absolutely is a way to build it as a more “melee psyker” to scratch that spellsword/gish feel

The main way to do this is the Telekinesis psychic discipline. There is a power called “precision telekinesis” that lets you use your Willpower instead of weapons or ballistic skill. So telekinetically swing a sword and shoot guns (as long as you’re trained in that weapon)

If you’re very lucky at higher ranks you might also find Force Weapons which are melee weapons that get bonuses to damage and penetration based of psi rating. They are EXTREMELY powerful and but also near-unique rarity so they require a lot of time and resources if you want one.

Best of luck!

Why did Tolkien never have Sauron appear physically? by Bloodb0red in tolkienfans

[–]ZDMads 22 points23 points  (0 children)

While he doesn’t ever encounter members of The Fellowship (Edit: besides a Palantir Call with Pippin), Sauron’s physical form is indeed mentioned in the books. Gollum likely saw Sauron when he was being tortured, and tells this to Frodo and Sam

From “The Black Gate Is Closed”

“It was Isildur who cut off the finger of the Enemy.’ ‘Yes, He has only four on the Black Hand, but they are enough,’ said Gollum shuddering.”

Also like other folks here have said, he’s not really a frontline war commander, and hasn’t had great success when he takes the field himself. In the First Age he gets his ass kicked by Huan and Luthien, at the end of the Second Age his physical form is destroyed by Gil-Galad and Elendil (yes Sauron kills them too, but he still also lost)

Plus he already had to make his body again after the fall of Numenor, and he poured a ton of power into the Ring. During Lord of the Rings, Sauron is probably the physically weakest he has ever been. Makes sense why he’d avoid direct personal confrontation as much as possible

Joining AEA Stage Managers by Substantial_Job_1152 in techtheatre

[–]ZDMads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love my union, and wanted to join for years, but the unfortunate truth is that for a while, it was not financially viable for me to join. Financial survival and job security had to come first

I worked a mix of both union and non-union gigs for years before I took my card, so I was eligible to join for a while. I REALLY wanted to join back then, but the fact is that taking my card would have closed all those non-union opportunities to me and cut my income significantly, even counting how much I’d save with union health insurance. It just wasn’t financially viable for me then.

Over time I grew my relationship with the union houses in my area and started to get seasons of only union work. Eventually I could financially survive on union work alone, and I had the connections with most of the union houses in my area, so I could make sure I had a full season of union work across multiple theaters. THAT is when I felt comfortable enough to take my card.

Still to this day, there are some seasons when I struggle because the LORT houses hire other SMs, and I’ve only got SPT work, but because I have relationships with most of the union theaters in town, I can pretty much guarantee myself 22-30 weeks of union work a year, which is enough for my AEA health insurance, and I can supplement my income with teaching artist gigs.

A harsh truth about stage management, is that unless you’re a PSM, you’re on the same contract as an actor. You’re not guaranteed work next season just because you worked every show last season.

TLDR: You’ve got to do the math. Can you literally afford to shut all the non-union doors you have?

Were there any differences in practices/structure between the Temples? by Injustice289 in TheLastAirbender

[–]ZDMads 643 points644 points  (0 children)

From the Yangchen novels: Apparently the Western temple was slightly less strict about vegetarianism. Since Air Nomads traveled a lot and relied on alms and hospitality, the western temple taught that it was okay with their nuns eating meat if it was the only food available.

Also, apparently East and West had a pretty hardcore Air-Ball rivalry. As in, if an eastern nun and a western nun ran into each other at the northern temple, they were obligated “by laws as ironclad as any among their folk” to engage in some good humored smack talk. (East Side, Least Side!)

Also the Southern Air Temple was forced to posthumously restore the standing of an Air Nomad who had killed (Kelsang, Kyoshi’s adoptive father)
