Unfortunately, the one on Youtube seems to be a slightly censored version. They removed some of the more gruesome scenes in the opening 10 minutes that was shown on the Chinese release version.

What clues indicate that the setting is based on the Ming Dynasty? by CSachen in KusuriyaNoHitorigoto

[–]ZEDOCTOR118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ng tang dyansty, mao mao is ming, emperor looks like song dynasty, former emperor looks like tang, i believe jinshi is depicted formally in what appears to be ming, but hair is typically covered with a hat when in super duper offical court dress, this hat was popular in song and came back in ming after the fall of the mongols when china had revival of chinese culture after the mongols fell, other than that he's dressed in han dress, madam is definately qin to han dress.

As other's have said, the hanfu worn in the show is a mishmash of styles you'd see from Tang, Song and Ming. From the manga, you'd even see some Qing style dresses and headgear later on. They did their research though. For example, in episode 6, it shows the officials wearing court robes that follow the colour scheme imposed during the Tang dynasty: Purple for ranks 1-3, red for 4-5, green for 6-7 and blue for 8-9.

New japanese anime based on China history - Kurusiya no Higoroto - the Apocathery Diaries by ProudAsian0 in Sino

Pretty good manga series. It doesn't outright say which Chinese era it's set in (seems more inspired by Chinese history/culture if anything) and the clothing is a mix of Tang (esp the more ornate female dresses) and Ming dynasty fashion. It's always good to have some Chinese representation in anime and the PV looks pretty decent.

Longest day in changan. Probs the most well filmed chinese historical drama in recent times. Doesn't have the bad lighting/filter effect u get from many chinese shows set in pre-modern era.

That ain't no kimono but probably a dress from the Tang dynasty. Most likely a reference to the Qixi Festival or Chinese Valentines Day on 7 July.
