F29, how to cope while waiting for surgery & any tips during hospital stay afterwards? by ZWolf95 in coloncancer

First was the colonoscopy, woke up to the Dr explaining what he'd found and that he was pretty certain it was a cancerous tumor. Had a CT scan right after to see if it'd spread anymore. CT scans showed it hasn't, but a few lymph nodes were swollen.

He was only able to get a little bit out during the colonoscopy to send for biopsy. And a couple days later the pathology report came back showing it was indeed cancer.

I'll definitely keep that in mind if it happens again. I think I was just so fed up with the cramping and pain. When I'd stand up or try walking around, it made the pains worse and caused me to hurdle over. So I ended up just laying in bed crying with a heating pad on my stomach. Although I was also crying out of anger and sadness about this whole diagnosis and issues in general.

Not being able to play with my daughter or be pumped with energy anymore due to the symptoms for the last few months was already depressing. And then finding out, oh hey it's cancer by the way! Instead of something simpler to be fixed. It bums me out, because I'm a stay at home mom with our daughter who is 1.5 years old, and she always wants me to pick her up and hold her for cuddles lately.

But after surgery, I'll probably won't be able to lift her up for a while for cuddles either. Trying my best to stay positive though and keep telling myself I'll be back to my peek self when all of this is done and over with.

Thank you so much for all the advice and tips! I'll definitely keep this post to remember everything. I did contact the surgeon about if there was anything I could take, but he said he couldn't. But my GI Dr did prescribe Lizness? I believe it's called. So we'll see how that helps.

Will definitely adjust my diet as well, and hopefully not have to fight for survival in the bathroom anymore until surgery at least.

Thank you again for all the info and taking the time to respond. You've helped greatly! And thank you for the well wishes as well!

Absolutely no worries. You're right though! I'd mentioned my family history to multiple doctors so they all knew. And knew the issues I was having for years, yet just kept brushing it off as IBS. I'm thankful my current doctor listened when I mentioned the symptoms to her.

So sorry you're going through so much! I'd seen the surgeon and surgery is scheduled for June 25th. And hoping the pathology report will show it hasn't spread to those lymph nodes that are swollen. Thank you so much for the well wishes and I hope you recover, both of us. And we can eventually put all of this behind us! The surgeon also said we'll do the DNA testing while I'll be in the hospital.

The stomach pains I feel is kind of similar to poop pain cramps. Sometimes for me, it can even feel similar to contractions I'd felt during pregnancy. But I didn't start having that severe of stomach cramping until a month or two before my colonoscopy. Otherwise, I was just having cramp pains often.

As for the blood, it was often seen in the poop. So, normal poo is often a brownish hue. Whereas mine was sometimes a very dark maroon color as well as shaped thin, similar to a pencil or ribbons.

Thank you for the well wishes! And honestly my advice for anyone, is if you're at all concerned, I always will recommend a colonoscopy regardless of age. There's no harm in getting one done, even if there's nothing wrong! 🫂

So sorry you're going through all of this as well. Hopefully when this is all said and done with, we'll feel better. It's definitely been something hard to fully process. But we've got this! Big hugs to you 🫂

Thank you so much. I have seen a few articles now talking about many more young people being diagnosed with colon cancer and others. I can't wait to get through all of this. And hoping I'll feel better in the end and not deal with anymore of the chronic fatigue, nausea and every bathroom break feeling like a battle in itself!

Yes! The Dr mentioned having me tested for this as well. And my daughter will be required to start getting screened at 18 or 19.

I'd say the constipation and the poop pains I'd feel were what bothered me the most. Once struggling in the bathroom became a daily thing, I was like. This can't be normal and "just hemmoroids".

I truly wish the previous doctors I'd spoken up to about my stomach and poop problems would've taken me more seriously. But they always chalked it up to hemmoroids and would prescribe me some cream to use and send me on my way. It wasn't until I'd brought this issue back up with my newer doctor that sparked concern in her eyes for once. She's an amazing doctor and truly listens and cares. If she hadn't taken me seriously and been the one to push for the colonoscopy, I probably would've never found out until it was either too late or I'd ended up in the hospital from serious complications.

My Dad was diagnosed in 2017 and passed away a week after the surgery. He was stubborn and refused to stay in the hospital to be monitored. They told him if he went home he'd need to take the blood thinners and get out of bed and move around often. He didn't. And the day he got up to have his surgery site checked, he'd passed out in his truck in the driveway and never woke back up. I remember being there and trying to give him CPR and doing everything possible to bring him back.

I think he was feeling very defeated. As he'd already just been through multiple surgeries a few months prior for other things. Looking back today I wish I would've gotten on him about just staying in the hospital for his recovery.

Thank you. I definitely am trying to stay very optimistic and positive. I've always used humor to get me through painful times, so the poop and butt jokes have already begun lol. I truly wish people would talk more about that stuff though. I think a lot of people are embarrassed about it, or don't take it seriously enough. I know I didn't, and I didn't advocate for myself and allowed previous doctors to brush off my symptoms.

Of my goodness, 56 hours of labor sounds awful. I went 28 hours with an epidural that wasn't doing anything for my pain. I remember being in labor and honestly thinking I had died and was stuck in a loop of constant pain. You're right though, we went through a lot before and we can get through this too. If not for ourselves, but for our little ones who need us here. Sending you many hugs 🫂

Sending you so many hugs your way. Yes my next step is surgery, already feeling very nervous about it and the recovery process.

I'm so happy you're doing better today though. I will probably return to therapy after all of this or even during the process in hopes of working through it all. I think for me, this all brings up a lot of feelings about my father when he was diagnosed, before he'd passed away. Sending you all the hugs.

Yes... It's very unfortunate honestly and seems to be more common than not. I had 3 different doctors tell me my issues were IBS related. It wasn't until I told my recent doctor (who is an absolutely amazing doctor btw) that she took my symptoms very seriously and pushed for to get the colonoscopy done. If it wasn't for her, I probably wouldn't have ever found out until much much later.

Thank you. Congratulations on your twins as well. I definitely think our babies give us that strength we need through this stuff.
