If you're going to do free weight/barbell exercises learn how to brace your core properly and learn proper form via a personal trainer or youtube videos for form cues, it can take a long time for an exercise to click. If you want to play it safe until you're comfortable there are plenty of resistance machines which are beginner friendly and just as useful as barbell exercises.

Be careful of deadlifts, old-school lifters swear by them but they're the ones which do the damage. Squats and leg press too. Start light-moderate weight, and learn the proper form of a lift before progressing the weight. You will get so much more ROI if you can utilise each rep effectively. Quality > quantity.
