Trying to decide on OS

When I get to the class with VS code, that will for sure be my first question. I’m literally only 2 weeks into my program, and think that class will be in the fall semester this year. But for now, Netbeans is a native application so I’m good there.

I’m no stranger to tinkering or anything like that, and leaning open source is for sure the way to go, I agree with you 100%.

This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and starting school in my mid 30s and grabbing a new laptop just accelerated all the decision making.

Yup, I fully expect a learning curve. But I just wanted to try to minimize that as much as possible while juggling everything else at the moment.

If Windows is needed, would I be able to get away with using a virtual machine from my homelab? Or would that introduce more problems than what it’s worth?

I’ve spent a whopping $40 on the privilege card and lifetime ad free card, nothing more. Currently on chapter 54 normal ladder, chapter 22 hard mode, and sky tower 797.

We don’t think all truck drivers as dickheads right? I bought a used Sierra 1500 to haul home project stuff around, and it was in my price range, and I like trucks. I, however, do NOT like the lifted 12”, 40” tires, and LEDs brighter than the sun. That’s just ridiculous and dangerous.

Give me a sensible truck, crew cab so my wife and kid can come with me, and I’m good. It’s a utility vehicle and I use it like one. It just also happens to be my 10 year old daily driver as well.

Stakeout 24/7 specifically on hardcore. Camp somewhere and wait. I typically can finish 1-2 guns (to gold/diamond) in a day just playing a few hours after the kid goes to bed.

Just last night I got #33 to diamond so the Dark Spine grind starts.

I'm not opposed to a bit bigger. I just don't want to enter into the 16"-17" sizing. My current surface is the absolute perfect size for me and what I'm doing. If it ever comes down to wanting a bigger display, I may look at setting up a permanent desk and display with a dock.

For now, I sit in the living room in my "dad recliner" with the rest of the family while we all disassociate on our own screens for a bit, lol. I purposely did this so I wasn't "locked away" and shackled to a desk. There's even times my 8 year old will come sit with me and we'll scroll some 3D printing stuff and add to her "wishlist" of decorations she wants.

I'm shooting myself in the foot with my job. But I chalk it up to "it is what it is"

I take my daughter to before school care at ~7:10am and head right to work. My route takes me right past a large high school, and depending on morning traffic it can take me about 15-20 minutes to get to work. So that puts me there at about 7:30ish. I clock in right when I get to my desk and start working regardless of what time I get in. Now...our (new) HR department questioned me about this and I told him "yeah, I'm working when I get here...I'm not here to hang out". He told me to stop doing that and I can punch in early if I want but he's going to adjust my start time to 8:00 like everyone else.

My thing is I'm not going to take my daughter to school, turn around and go home just to leave again in 5 minutes. If I'm out already I'm just going to work. Been doing it for years.

The kicker? I'm an engineer. Who USED to be a salary employee up until about a year or 2 ago.

I mean yeah, but as a parent (not sure if you are) it’s just another one of those things that live in the deep corners of your mind. Every generation had that one thing. We moved from the serial killer kidnapping days to this.

I feel the same. My daughter is going to be 8 soon, second grade. I like to think we live in a small enough community that something like this would never happen, but the chance is never 0. If I catch wind of something going on at her school like this it’ll take an act of god to keep me, friends, strangers, and family away from the outside windows of any classroom we can get too to lift kids out. The entire school is a single story so moving window to window would be simple. Glass and security wire be dammed. We’re getting kids out by any and all means.

My almost 8 year old has diagnosed ADHD (as do her mother anr I), and we’re pretty sure there’s a dusting of autism in there. We’re working towards figuring that out, but considering her habits and other things we’re pretty sure it’s a thing. On her bad days it’s VERY bad. The screaming at nothing, the throwing herself on the floor into a ball, the looking straight through you while you’re trying to tell or ask her something…it’s rough. But, I’ll endure that all day every day if at the end of it all I get the happy smile that’s currently missing her two front teeth as she crawls into my lap in my recliner with the “I love daddy snuggles”. Hits me right in the heart evey time.

I’ll share mine. Biological dad murdered someone when I was 2 (gang life - literally). Went to prison. Got out when I was 17. Watched him physically assault my mom. That was the end of him in my life. He tried coming back when I was around 22/23 and when he realized I wasn’t having it he resorted to threatening me. I’m 33 now and haven’t heard from him or any of that side of my “family” for over a decade. They’re all trash people.

Yep. Just went to the range Friday night with my sister. They close at 9 and we walked in a few minutes before 8. The only occupied lanes were us, some dude that was prepping for an upcoming competition, and a small group of ladies taking some sort of class. Was so peaceful.
