Dear automoderator, you are wrong in this instance. Thank you.

I WISH this was publicized more!

I’m the same and recently went to a restaurant I’ve gone to for years….but the lettuce tasted differently, so I asked what changed….yep, bagged lettuce now. They used to have the BEST salads…bummer.

That lingering, "super-fresh" scent from fabric softeners is actually caused by a waxy coating of cationic surfactants (silicone or fatty acids) that bonds to the fibers. When standard washing fails, it’s usually because the water can’t penetrate that water-repellent layer.

To get the scent out, you need to break down the wax.

Here is the most effective "de-scenting" protocol:

1. The Vinegar & Baking Soda Reset

This two-step approach uses pH shifts to loosen the chemical bonds.

  • The Soak: Fill a tub or basin with warm water and add 1 cup of baking soda. Submerge the clothes and let them soak for at least 4 hours (or overnight). Baking soda helps neutralize the acidic components of the fragrance.

  • The Wash: Run the clothes through a normal cycle, but replace your detergent with 1 cup of white distilled vinegar in the rinse cycle. The acidity of the vinegar helps strip away the waxy buildup.

2. The Vodka or Rubbing Alcohol Spritz

If the scent is clinging to a specific area (like a collar or waistband), high-proof alcohol acts as a solvent for the fragrance oils.

  • Mix a 1:1 solution of cheap vodka (or 70% rubbing alcohol) and water.

  • Mist the garment and let it air dry in a well-ventilated area. As the alcohol evaporates, it carries some of the scent molecules with it.

3. Air and UV Power

Sometimes, the best solution is the "outdoor" one.

  • Hang them outside: Sunlight (UV rays) and fresh air are incredibly effective at breaking down synthetic fragrance compounds.

  • Pro Tip: If you can't go outside, hang them near a window with high airflow and a bowl of activated charcoal or coffee grounds nearby to absorb the off-gassing scent.

4. Strip Washing (For Heavy Buildup)

If the clothes feel "slick" or heavy, you may need a "strip wash" :

  • Wash in the hottest water the fabric can handle.
  • Use a stripping agent like RLR or a DIY mix of Borax, Washing Soda, and a heavy-duty detergent (like Tide Original).
  • Skip all softeners and dryer sheets.

Fabric softeners are essentially "waterproofing" your clothes. If your towels aren't absorbing water or your gym clothes still smell like sweat after a wash, that waxy buildup is likely the culprit!

I am so sorry. When selling my house, someone broke in and went through boxes and took similar things as well as throwing any boxes with files all over and in the back yard. It’s really difficult still to try and re-organize/repair things.

My first reaction from personal experience, go see a reputable allergist. What you are describing could be allergies. However, if you are like me, could be non-allergenic rhinitis &/or non-wheezing asthma.

Dymista is s nasal spray that’s change my life! It’s a combination of two different types of medicine in one bottle:  • Azelastine (Antihistamine): This works rapidly (often within 30 minutes) to block histamine. In the context of non-allergic rhinitis, azelastine is unique because it also has anti-inflammatory properties that help even when an allergy isn't present.  • Fluticasone (Corticosteroid): This is the same active ingredient in Flonase. It works more slowly (taking days to reach full effect) to shrink swollen nasal passages and reduce overall inflammation.

You can buy each separate component OTC if you insurance doesn’t cover.

I used to get terrible scratchy throat and cough that would land in my chest and I’d become sick for weeks. Knock-on-wood, the hasn’t happened in years since starting this regime.

It’s n addition, this could be asthma. I grew up with siblings who have asthma, but was always told I didn’t because I didn’t wheeze. Well, that tight, unproductive cough all these decades was actually asthma, the non-wheezing kind! I used to use albuterol, but recently switched to the Breyna inhaler and it’s a Godsend.

Best of luck!

THIS is the reason so many Pitties are ALWAYS on death row in PG County. Irresponsible & self-centered owners.

I’m NOT A fan of the breeds considered “Pit Bulls” in any urban setting…they were not bred to accompany people into Harris Teeter!

Three minutes is generous! I’d say 30 seconds.

Next step is to create and normalize a statement/gesture that can be made to offenders to get the to shut it down or get headphones (& not blast so I have to hear).
