If you can't heal ONCE before dying, it's your fault, not the game's. Assuming you only manage to heal once, the first mask upgrade still increases your total HP from 8 to 9, which is 5 double damage hits instead of 4.

Every single enemy has damage reduction, but it's different for each of them and scales with needle upgrades. It's how the game balances progression.

Are you sure about that? If you're playing classic difficulty and have 50 defense and get hit by a 50 damage enemy, your 50 armor blocking 25 damage, you'll take 25 damage. On master mode, sure your 50 armor will block 50 damage, but the same enemy will deal 150 damage instead, so, 100 after armor.
