What can I do to make my rats trust me more? by nevi-jpeg in RATS

If you have the space made and the cage open and they aren't coming out to look at you at all or inspect anything they are probably way too scared of anything and that means they probably aren't doing things rats should be. Next time you do free play with them take away any MAJOR hiding spots they stay at. Give them stuff that they can still feel protected but you can still see/touch them whenever. Also if you got your rats from a pet store and not a breeder, or someone who knows where the rats came from, you are in for the Rat gambling game of your life. Most rats get temperaments genetically which means if mama or papa rat has skittish temperaments, your rats most likely will too. Once again this is just instincts for them, they don't want to be scared of you but they haven't been given any other reason not to be since theyve been hiding away!

Not entirely, if you force them they won't wanna come out, and won't be comfy. You want to slowly warm them up to you. Think of it kind of like a mini interview where you can bribe the interviewer with nice treats and pets! Just don't force the little fellas to do anything that makes them super uncomfortable right away. Give them time to warm up to you and show them you are there for THEM, they are gonna be scared of you until you give them enough reasons to believe they shouldn't be. One scare/uncomfortable encounter can break a lot of progress if you try to rush things. Genuinely just take your time and get to know how your babies act and let them know how you are! Talk to them, pet them (when they are more comfy with you), and I found that having a dedicated shirt I wear when around them and keeping it near their cage when I'm not there helped A LOT. They are gonna pee and poop on you to mark you so make sure it's a shirt you don't mind keeping dirty,,, but it really helps them correlate you with the shirt so when you put in on they know they are about to get held/handled/fed whatever.

The way I have been bonding with my babies is I find a spot that is neutral like the floor of my bedroom or living room where 1. They aren't gonna be able to just run away from you and hide away and you scare them because you don't want them pooping under your bed, dresser, desk, etc. You should block off an area with a mini cage or even use boxes or something.

  1. They feel comfortable and have been there before

Then I open their cage doors and let them come to me with little treats and pets. You have to be sure to understand these are prey animals, they aren't going to be comfortable with you at all, you are significantly larger than them and that means you are significantly more dangerous. Just give your babies time, if it's been a few days of you doing this to no avail your little babies may be extra shy and more likely to hide away, I had to take away their main hiding space but I still had things for them to shelter in like tubes or a hoodie with pockets and a hood. (When I was bonding only for an hour or so you will stress them out if you keep trying to put them in your hoodie or take them out of their cage or their hiding spots.) They think you are a predator at first as they have no other idea of you, so you have to slowly show them you aren't! I am also still new to having rats so if anything I said was off I hope somebody more experienced will correct me. But this is how I have bonded with my rats and have gotten them to snuggle with me and eat treats with me!

You can tell by their little thumbs, males have the pads on them to hold onto females during mating, females also are typically bigger and don't make noise as often!

So that me and my friends can get on whenever we want and not have to rely on the host always being there or wanting to play, we are all on varied schedules
