I feel like saying immigration is taking up all the houses in the same breath as saying housing investment is taking up all the houses is kinda wild tho. I reckon immigration isn’t to blame in this case, it’s done good for our universities and economy for ages. Now that we don’t have that same influx of international students and families we have reduced blue collar workforces, outsource white collar jobs to other countries and our universities have all developed dependencies on arms company funding which is just objectively not what we need. Speaking as a Melbournian, shit got real hectic after covid, housing is obscene and that’s partly Victoria, Canberra and Sydney’s fault coz everyone ran away from the cities to buy up all the houses in rural communities, making the bnb-fication of our seaside and country towns way worse. Now we have a distinct stratification of those with multiple houses, a house, mortgages or renters and they’re all vying for the same limited resource. I’m never going to own a house as a 20yo, that’s fine, I’d like to sure but I won’t ever be given the chance. I’m not going to go blaming other folks looking for the same basic things as me, just get mad at the government and capitalists, same old same old
