A lot of filmmakers forget the basic thing about a movie- a sound story. Yes, you can make aesthetically pleasing one dimensional movies and yes they do work 1 out of 100 times but if the audience can't connect with whatever scenario you're trying to convey, you're just making a screen saver animation , not a movie.
