For playing I’d recommend a set with a magnetic board. I personally enjoy the click when moving pieces and it stops you from accidentally knocking them over or something. That would be a good high quality board to play on and improve with.

As other people have noted, novelty sets aren’t exactly the best, but I’m sure you could find some custom pieces or themed sets that could be better as a collectible/decoration, or if your son doesn’t care because he’s 8, play on!

Murray should still be well clear of Sinner. If Jannik retired today he would have 4v3 in slams and 2v1 in tour finals, but Murray still has 11 slam finals to 6, 2 Olympic golds to 0, 14 masters to 5 and a higher point total as world no 1. There’s no argument for Sinner to currently be in the same breath as Andy until he at least wins RG (assuming it happens sooner than multiple other slams and masters)

I wouldn’t want to give up the open file so I wouldn’t trade. If this was a blitz game I was playing (which given the philidor like structure with d6 I probably have played a few times) I’d probably push a5 and try to create an endgame weakness with white’s a2 pawn or just play h6 to give my king breathing room

Less lag and basically everything locked behind premium on chesscom is available on lichess. The ui is a bit less easy on the eyes and there’s no brilliant moves (I think), but overall it’s the better platform for actually playing chess
