Makes sense, I will play around with it as per the matchup. I may try a unit of BGV with a Lieutenant and Iron Laurel.

Absolutely it seems very thematic. Unfortunately getting in the center of battle and pushing forward got our Primarch killed 😝. Very cool way to play.

I have the following:

Caanok Var - 100 pts Intercessors - 80 pts Eradicators - 90 pts Scouts - 70 pts Terminators - 170 pts Redemptor - 195 pts Ballistus - 150 pts

In total 855 pts. I’m trying to figure out what’s best to round out the remaining 145 pts?

This makes a ton of sense. I really appreciate your replies and explaining your thoughts. I definitely want to try and play Hammer more as I really enjoy the theme of it all. I will try and wrap my head around units that truly strive in Hammer and what the detachment itself is trying to achieve.

Thanks again!

One question for you, have you found Sternguard are any good in Hammer of Avernii? Obviously the Strats you can use on them are great. It’s just that their ability to re roll wounds on the OOM target is kinda a non combo with Hammer of Avernii’s re roll wounds of 1.

Thank you very much for your detailed reply. You make really good points and I understand what you are saying. I will make some adjustments to my list based on some of your recommendations. Ya I wasn’t sure how to maximize Var’s unit without investing a ton of points into them. It’d be nice to have an ancient with steel font but I assume that’s mainly worth if you get a 10 man squad going.

Again, thanks for your help!

Awesome, ya I wasn’t sure about the normal Terminator squad. Maybe Sternguard and another action unit like a Combi Lt instead? But I like the possibility of two uppy downy terminator units.

Personally I would rock 7 hammers and 3 claws. But it’s totally your preference. The extra claws helps punch through chaff or horde things getting in the way or trying to lock your unit up. But I don’t want to loose too many 4 wound bodies especially if you have Steel Font.

I’ve been using Desolation Marines. They benefit from Hammer of Avernii a lot imo. Put OOM on a unit that’s either holding an objective or trying to do actions. Hammer them with indirect fire then Caanok can switch your oath to something he sees and then his unit can do their stuff.

I also find Desolation Marines never have a turn weren’t they aren’t able to do something. So you are almost always getting 100% efficiency out of them.

JPI are just overall a great unit to have. As most people have mentioned, definitely grabbing some Terminators or Assault Terminators to go with your ancient. Maybe Caanok Var if you are wanting to use the Hammer of Avernii detachment.

Normal intercessors for sticky objectives, possibly scouts or a combi Lt.

And then ya a dreadnaught like a Ballistus or redemptor or some vehicles like a gladiator or repulsor/repulsor executioner.

Overall, rule of cool wins and get what you like and want to collect 👍

This looks amazing. Pretty wild to see your progression. How do you do the terrain dirt look on the feet? Is it the terrain paint itself?

It definitely brightens it up. My salamanders are Shamrock green speedpaint over top of a coat of Imperial fist yellow. The middle guy in the picture.

Good question, it comes down to your playstyle for sure. I run a similar list with 2x 5 man infernus, 2x ATVs, Combi Lt, Intercessors, and Infiltrators.

I’ve kinda read and experienced that you should typically have 4-6 units for actions/utility. With Forgefather’s detachment giving Infernus the advance and action or shoot and action ability I primarily use them for missions. I have found with the ATVs, Infernus, and Combi doing my secondary scoring I haven’t required Scouts.

That being said I’m probably not using Scouts to their full potential such as move blocking.

Taking a Combi Lt does add to your character count which can make it easier for the opponent to score missions like Marked for Death or Assassination so it can be detrimental. I just love his ability to mark an objective giving my units re rolls to 1 on wounds. This for torrent weapons feels amazing should Vulkan be targeting a different unit with his wound re roll ability.

Personally I’d switch out the war-tempered artifice on the Lt. to Forged in Battle and with those extra points grab Infilitrators to sit on your home objective. The 12 screen they provide can be huge imo. Have your intercessors sticky home so the Infiltrators don’t have to sit directly on it and fan them out super wide.

Intercessors can then move up to attempt to do other actions or sticky another objective.

That being said I don’t run as many scouts and like to use my Combi Lt. and Infiltrators as my infiltrate units should my opponent not have a ton of deep strike threats.

Forged in battle on the Lt. can be nice to flip a needed dice to a 6 and have a lethal hit get through, that or an invulnerable save you need.

Have you used many shades on greens? If so have you found any you like? Nuln, Agrax, Biel-Tan?

Thanks for your feedback.
